    Default New Mac user

Alright guys, I just bought a MacBook Pro. I'm pretty new with Macs I usually use PCs. I'm just wondering what should be some of the first things I should do with it. Are there any good programs I need to install to keep it running well and in tip-top shape? Is the battery charging kind of the same as an iPhone? Let it die first couple of times and then charge it all the way? I just wanna make sure I keep this thing healthy bc it is for school. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

With my own experience (particularly with the older generation Macbook Pros, where you can remove the battery), you could try all the conditioning you wanted but the battery was still going to lose most of its charge after a year and a half or two.

This is not the case with the newer Macbook Pros though, since the batteries are different. It's usually not advisable to let the battery completely die, just to a low enough charge, say 10%.

As far as for applications to keep the Mac in good condition? Just use it normally. If you feel like it's getting too hot, or the fans aren't kicking in soon enough, there's a free application called SMCFanControl that'll display the temperature of the CPU and allows for changing fan speeds. Alternatively (and one of my favorites), iStatMenus does the same and displays much more information, like CPU usage, Memory usage, HD usage, Network, etc. for $16.

O ok. Well thanks for the info. Those apps sound like they will be really helpful. Are there any plug ins I can install so I can watch sports on the web? I tried going to my sites tonight, but a message popped up saying it couldn't find any plug ins that are compatible?

    Chances are you'll need Flash.
    Grab it from:
Adobe - Install a different version of Adobe Flash Player

Microsoft also has a Silverlight plugin for OS X. Useful for watching Netflix on your Macbook Pro.

An application that can play almost every audio/video format you throw at it, VLC:
VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

Perian, a plugin for Quicktime which supports many more formats:
Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTimeŽ components

And for those stubborn sites that insist on using WMV to display video, Flip4Mac:
Windows Media Components for QuickTime - Microsoft Windows

Hi, sorry to respond to an oldish post but I too am a new MAC user and by brother donated an A1181 to me. First thing I noticed was it was rather hot on my lap! CPU was running at 60C + so I did a little reading and it appears the air intake for the fan is mostly through the keyboard, under some of the keys. I vacuumed the keyboard using the brush attachment at full vacuum and hey presto, temperature now running at 51C even with heavy use! So top tip, get hour hoover into action and protect that CPU/GPU

since you have one of the newer macbook pros i would also recommend gfxCardStatus. Since the new MBP has 2 different gpu's its constantly switching between the 2 for either better battery life or better performance. This app will sit up on the top status bar and tell you which gpu is being used and gives you the option to change it if you want.
