my new powermac G5... a question on it.. video card and power supply?
got a 2Ghz dual core G5 tower from my buddys cousin for 30 bucks, and im uber happy with it. 4.5GB of ram blah blah, it screams. however, the video card sucks. (pci-e model). a 6600LE.
id like to drop my GT240 in it, but from what I know about hackintosh, the GT215 core is only usable in 10.6.2 and above. not to mention this is pre-EFI. open firmware.
As far as I know, the most powerful card that is able to be used on a G5 is a Geforce 7800GTX 512MB. though I have heard rumors that someone got a 9600GT working in one. can anyone back that up or give me more info on the compatible cards?
second question. past 2 days the airport has been crashing then coming back up. (card disappearing from system then suddenly coming back). today it froze while installing FLStudio in Virtual PC 7 (i have NEVER, NEVER seen a G5 just utterly LOCK UP. i was amazed). after i rebooted, it refused to boot. did everything I knew how to do. it came up once or twice, but immediately wouldnt boot back up again after a reboot. i thought power supply... and looks like ill be doing some soldering/mcguyvering. then i remembered my training from this forum, and my hackintosh roots came back. i booted it in verbose. locked up on the bluetooth kext. (these late G5s come with the airport ON the bluetooth card, stupid design, but anyway.) that explains the airport activity... the host card is done.
sure enough, it booted up with no hiccups. i have booted it 23 times since then, i think im in the clear. my question is this: should i be keeping an eye on the power supply, that the bluetooth thing was just a fluke? or can a dying bluetooth card cause a kernel panic?

ok so put the bluetooth back in, it kept disconnecting from my iphone, and the other day it just wouldnt boot. removed bluetooth and its fine.
i have also upgraded the video card to a 7800GTX 512MB PCI-E. doom 3 performance: 6600LE 128MB: avg. 15 fps. 7800GTX: around 50fps. WoW (on a private server), 6600LE: low detail runs around 30fps. 7800GTX: good detail minorly tweaked with max terrain textures and weather/spell detail: solid 60 fps. no glitching.
i will also say that Tiger runs OpenGL games SOOOOO much faster than Leopard. whats sad is WoW on this G5 is better than WoW on the hackintosh running the latest version of snow leopard with a MUCH MORE powerful video card.
