Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer
Hi all - I have a 13 inch MacBook and wanted to erase and start it over again, so I put my 15 inch MacBook Pro disk in it with Snow Leopard (which is what was on the 13 inch when I bought it) but I keep getting the error "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.
I have looked all through this forum and cannot find out how to make it successfully install. I am not a newby to computers but I am a newby to mac's.
Please assist I was about to give it as a present and need to have it ready to go today.
Thanks

You need the recovery disk for a 13in MacBook, not the 15 in. A recovery disk only works for that specific model.
You need a Retail copy of Snow Leopard. A local Apple Store may help you out with recovery disks.

Possible solution
It is true that you need the model specific restore disc or a generic installer to fix your problem. There also might be another way....
Do you have a working Mac that you have admin access to? Do you have an external FW or USB hard drive?
If you can answer yes to those, then I might be able to show you how to make a generic installer from your restore disc.

Its could be that the macbook requires a specific build for that model. If you lost the discs, give Apple a call and they will send you a new set!

Apple make two types of system disc, restore discs which are machine specific, and generic install cd's and dvd's which will install to any machine- if it meets the minimum requirements.

This is false information.

You know what? I just read the original posting date here, this is a dead issue, we're talking to ourselves.
