Do you update your iMovie? What OSX version? Is a AMD machine?

Yeah I had the same issue, you have to use Software Update to update iMove/iLife and then it should work...if you are on AMD you might need to use Marvin's AMD Utility to patch the binaries.

I had the same problem. Your best bet is to leave it alone and go get iMovie 06 (iMovie HD). iMovie HD is so much better than 08. Apple should be ashamed of themselves for releasing iMovie 08 and calling it an upgrade. Check it out and you will understand what I am talking about. I'm sure you know where to find it. While you are there also grab the "QuickTimeMPEG2 codec". You can access many more feature and encode more formats with this. Ditch iMovie 08 and grab iMovie HD. Trust me, you will be glad you did.
