Default Finally gave in. Got a mac..With a few questions.

    Hey all.

I have just bought an iMac 21.5".

    I have a few questions:

I have bought Parallels Desktop, and Windows 7. If I allocate 1gb ram to windows, will it be permanently dedicated or only be used when I run Parallels?

Also, how do I uninstall apps. I have installed a few, and now, I want to remove them.

I have a lot of movies in my PC. I want to move them to my Mac. But, I am confused where to move them? Which folder?

    Same for Music, Images etc..

Are there any good free GarageBand tutorials out there?

Is there any way for running Windows apps on Mac without virtualization?

Also, how do I find my "System Properties"? Like RAM, HD left, OS bit (32 or 64) etc?

That's all I can think of as of now. Please answer.

    Thanks

the 1 GB of memory is used only when parallels is running

there is in your home directory a Movie directory
the Music import it to iTunes and it will copy them automatically to the right place. You have a Pictures directory for the pictures in your home directory. I would rather import them in iPhoto.

Windows has a different way of working than the mac. Programs that optimise on windows often actually make things worse. You generally don't need such programs on the mac but several good free programs exist one example is Apple - Downloads - System/Disk Utilities - OnyX

For recording the screen and making videos Snapz Pro X | Ambrosia Software, Inc. has long been the main player in this area. There are many other apps that have similar functionality for example Screencasting Software - ScreenFlow Overview - Telestream or Jing | Add visuals to your online conversations

It's a bit of a stretch to expect mac owners to know or care about the multitude of mostly useless "optimization" programs that exist on windows.

When I googled it, deleting firefox cookies was not the biggest bullet point of this software. You know that firefox can delete cookies each time you shut it down.

What are you after? "less files" or "hiding your tracks" or "blocking ad tracking"

The cleanup cache/browser files is generally a myth by the way. It does not really make modern machines noticeably faster

Yes I can recommend many apps, I understand that the switchover can be confusing and you feel a natural urge to seek out old comfortable favourites from Windows.

My advice is to actualy try and use Mac OS for a while, get a feel for what you like and what you feel is missing before you start searching for identical equivalents to the programs you had on windows. Many things you ask about are built in on the mac. This optimization of small files/cleanup of caches for example.

On safari, the cookies are stored in one file. So deleting specific cookies does not save much disk space or reduce the number of files on the disk.

Files under 20MB are automatically defragmented the next time they are opened by the OS if the machine is not too busy.

Also your screen recording question. Quicktime X on Snow Leopard has a basic form of this built in.

So it's worth the effort to learn what you get out of the box before trying to replace your software - especially if some of these replacements cost $$

    Hey

Got another trouble. The Mac's monitor gets too hot in just a little time. It's unbearably hot. I fear the hardware might get bad.

    Is it normal?
