    try

    do shell script "cp -R $HOME/Pictures /Volumes/name_of_external_volume/"

cp is the same as copy, -R indicates to copy a directory including the files and folders inside.

If you put a / after Pictures it will only copy the content of Pictures to the external drive, not the folder Pictures.

I do full backups this way ;-)

One more to be added: On shell scripts (or in Terminal on the Mac) a space in a drive's or folder's name has to be escaped, example: If it were just the shell shript and the external would read "External HD", the pure shell script would be

    cp -R $HOME/Pictures /Volumes/External\ HD/

You get \ when typing 7 while holding option-shift or the Mac's keyboard. The Problem, when using AppleScript's do shell script:

    do shell script "cp -R $HOME/Pictures /Volumes/External\ HD/"

will throw an error, you need to escape the space twice, this one will work:

    do shell script "cp -R $HOME/Pictures /Volumes/External\\ HD/"

    happy hacking,

dude cheers, this is skewing off the thread, in folders you can get the folders to show as a list, is there anyway to do this on the desktop, rather than using icons??

Yes and no. Desktop is a folder in your Home directory. Same rules apply as as on other folders. If you are talking about the options to display the desktop in finder you only can change folder size etc.

hope i got the question correct ;-)

sorry i think i explained it wrong. by desktop i mean the main screen. For example, when you first load your mach you see the HDD as Macintosh HDD as a Icon on desktop. Can i get the desktop to list rather than show icons?

Sorry, no this wont work. I remember manymany years ago there was a Finder replacement that could do it. But I dont remember the name, dont even know if this was before Mac-OS X ;-)
