Default iPhone, iPod Touch: [HowTo] report an iTunes restore/update fail in a useful manner

    iPhone, iPod Touch:
HOW-TO post about an iTunes restore or update problem in a useful manner

If you restored, updated or downgraded via iTunes and it failed with an error code then:
Read this article Update and restore alert messages on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Try the troubleshooting steps suggested there (except "restore to the latest iOS version"!)

NOTE: Error 1015 is normal with downgrades, you just need to use TinyUmbrella to exit recovery mode after the downgrade.

If you are still stuck after you have tried the troubleshooting steps suggested by Apple. The following details in your post will ensure you get the quickest response to your problem:

    • iTunes version (e.g. 9.1.1.12)
    • iPhone OS version (before restore/update) (e.g. 3.1.2)
    • Platform (e.g. OS X, Windows, Windows x64, Linux, etc.)
    • OS Version (e.g. 10.5, 10.6 or Windows 7 etc.)
    • Detailed Instructions to Reproduce the Problem (The more specific the better.)
    • FULL iTunes restore Log (Please use your favorite paste site! See below.) << NOT OPTIONAL!

"Latest" is a completely useless version!
When referring to the version of something, ALWAYS be as detailed as possible. Saying you're using the latest version of something is wrong the second it is updated, and completely useless to someone looking for help on a similar problem in the future.

Where is my iTunes restore log located?
This depends on your platform and your type of iDevice

    OS X
    iPhoneUpdater XX.log:
    Code:
    ~/Library/Logs/iPhone Updater Logs/
    iPodUpdater XX.log:
    Code:
    ~/Library/Logs/iPod Updater Logs/
    1. Switch to the Finder
    2. Select "Go to Folder" from the Go menu
    3. Paste the path listed above and click OK. The correct folder will open.
    4. Look for a log file that was created around the same time your restore/update failed.

    Windows
    iPhoneUpdater XX.log
    Code:
    %AppData%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Updater Logs
    iPodUpdater XX.log
    Code:
    %AppData%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Updater Logs\
These locations may look strange, however windows knows how to expand %AppData% to the correct location. This works for all users on versions of Windows from Windows XP to Windows 7.

    1. Hold down the windows key and press R. This brings up the run program window.
    2. Paste in for example "%AppData%\Apple Computer\iPhone Updater Logs\" and click OK.
    3. The correct folder will open in windows explorer and should contain at least one log file.
    4. Look for a log file that was created around the same time your restore/update failed.

NOTE: If this does not work, you may need to make sure you have enabled "show hidden files, folders and drives". Instructions for enabling this on windows 7 are here Show hidden files (vista, windows 7) or Show hidden files (XP)

Paste any log files you find to one of the paste sites listed below.

What are paste sites all about?
    • Forums, email or instant messaging programs and other collaborative sites usually set limits on the length of messages. They mostly limit message sizes for performance reasons but also it can be frustrating to scroll through pages of pasted text in a forum.
    • Paste sites are websites where you can store plain text for a certain period of time. The idea behind paste sites is to make it more convenient for people to share large amounts of text online. Users also have the ability to make private pastings, so they are only visible to the people they choose to share their links with.

How do I use a paste site to share log files related to my problem?
    1. Locate and open the log file with notepad (or TextEdit on OS X)
    2. Select all text and copy/paste it to a new paste on the paste site of your choice.
    3. Once you submit the log file to your chosen paste site, you will receive a web link that allows you to share your "pasted text". Include that web link into your hackint0sh post.
    4. If you have tried more than once to restore and got different errors repeat this process for all the pertinent log

Doing this allows anyone who reads your hackint0sh post can choose to look at the pasted log file by simply clicking on the link.

Posting of the whole or part of a log directly into a thread here on hackint0sh, may result in your post being edited or moderated.

    Paste sites:
    www.pastebin.com
    pastebin - Type, paste, share.

Sorry about that. I was a bit anxious being a new phone.
I managed to do a restore and Limera1n worked without a hitch so now my iPhone 4 4.1 is jailbroken and I transferred my Cydia programs from my 3G.

Great site and thanks for the help! I will definitely be using the resources here. There is tons of information.

Disconnect and reconnect your iPod to iTunes, and then attempt to restore or update the iPod again.

Closing thread -- it's attracting too many people who are posting their logs in this post and not in the original forum post (or a new post elsewhere).
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.
