Im reading various guides, some say to put the iphone in restore mode (with the cable & i tunes logo) see this youtube tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdrayUqw0Uw

On the other hand Trunkz's guide clearly says to put it into DFU mode (and the screen should be black - no cable and itunes logo)

Is there any difference between the 2 methods? if so, which one is safer.

    Thanks alot!
    DFU mode, worked for me!

my phone is messed up. I think restoring would help. Are there any risks restoring a jailbreaked phone? all data and apps will be gone but it will work and not get stuck at activation screen or something like that? If i just restore and do the whole thing again. Do i have to activate again?

You guys are absolute legends! Can't thank you enough for this excellent step by step guide.

I am no computer expert. Far from it: They often confuse me to the point of total frustration. I am keen to learn however and really wanted to try this.

After reading the guide and the thread a couple of times (a mighty task in itself) I bit the bullet yesterday afternoon and got down to it with a brand new U.K. iPhone straight out of the box.

I stumbled a couple of times but persevered, and after about two hours I appeared to have completed the task successfully. However I was unable to know for sure as I had to wait until today for my new O2 Simplicity sim card to arrive.

It was quite an anxious night but when the sim card arrived this morning I popped it in and it worked!

In fact, everything is working except for visual voicemail (which I think is pretty overrated anyway). Edge: Perfect. YouTube: Perfect. Me: Totally happy, if not a little surprised that I managed to do it without messing things up.

Kudos to you all. Many thanks again!

a restore will reset to factory default, so youll need to activate etc all over again...

glad you got it working, and TAHNKYOU SO MUCH FOR READING THE ENTIRE THREAD
so many people dont, and you end up repeating the same thing over and over
visual voicemail wont work without an iphone contract, but:
Open up your iPhone's number keyboard, and type the following:

*5005*86*xxx# (Make sure to replace xxx with your voicemail number. For O2 customers, its 901)

Once you have done that, tap the Call button. The screen will say 'Please wait' for a few seconds, and then it's done. Now the next time you tap
Voicemail on your iPhone, it'll dial up your Voicemail

    Cheers.
Thanks for trying that out - it means that if I do get the cash for the phone I can try the jailbreak and check its worked with my existing Tesco sim!

Then if I want to make use of data etc I can swap to an O2 sim if I want, but I wouldn't have to to get the iPod in a Phone that I want

    Thanks again.

Sorry Phil, I should have mentioned that I also set up the voicemail using your method (which I spotted in the FAQs, and several times thereafter).

    Works perfectly. Thanks.

thanks guys for all your help
I restored my phone and it's working fine. for now anyways. However iTunes crashed in the middle of the first sync after giving the phone a name. Now it's just called iPhone. Is there a way to rename without restoring? not a big deal but if it can be done easily i'd like to change it.

I had this problem yesterday and thought I would be stuck with an iPhone called 'untitled playlist'!

Connect to iTunes and when the iPhone appears in the left column (but not during a synch) click on the name and then call it what you want. Voilá!

    A) This was suggested by pgilder. Open up your iPhone's number keyboard, and type the following:

*5005*86*xxx# (Make sure to replace xxx with your voicemail number. For O2 customers, its 901)
That's why I thought it was your method.
