Default Java applets not working on FF7, Chrome, but do work on FF3.6, Safari

    Hi,

On a real hardware Mac, I don't have this problem. But on unsupported HW, (actually, ESXi 5), I can't get FF7 or Chrome to properly run Java applets (had the same problem with Snow Leo, upgraded to Lion hoping to solve the problem). Other web pages w/out java applets work fine.

On safari or firefox 3.6 on this same VM, any java applet in the browser works.

On Firefox 7 the applet simply shows as a black outline of a rectangle. On Chrome, the location of the applet becomes transparent and I can see the graphics 'behind' that window.

On this machine running Lion that has the problem, I already installed Java after upgrading to Lion, since it doesn't come with Lion. That isn't the problem. This problem is specific to FF7 and Chrome, but does not happen with FF 3.6 or Safari.

Interestingly, when I ran firefox from terminal on Snow Leopard, I saw some error messages that would only occur when I went to a webpage with an applet: I wish I would have copied them down but it said something about: "invalid pixel", and "can't run in headless mode". Sounds like it could be related, given that the problem does appear to be in "displaying" an applet.

Showing the java console in the failure case didn't show anything interesting.

Any ideas? I'm using this VM of Lion to do some testing, and I need to test an applet in FF 7 and Chrome, not just FF 3.6 and Safari.

Legit Mac hardware running the same version of Lion going to the same web page w/ the applet works fine.

Default does anyone else see the same problem?

    Hi,

Is anyone else seeing the same problem? (does anyone else even run snow leo or lion under esxi? Note I'm not talking about vmware fusion, but rather esxi).

At this point I have FF 3.6 displaying applets correctly, FF7 won't. But they're both using the same plugin and same JRE -- so it must have something to do with the way FF7 interacts w/ the plugin. I found options in FF7 for "use hardware acceleration where possible" and disabled it. No luck. Similarly, looked at about:config and found a few options that appeared graphics related and tried tweaking them -- no luck.

At this point I'd like to confirm my sanity and see if anyone else out there is even seeing the same thing.

    Thanks!
