Default Idea for a hack tablet.

I don't know how well-received this idea is, but I had an idea. I don't really know where this idea should go, so I'm just putting it here.

I'm a music student in college and I was thinking something the other day. I've got an iPad, and it's pretty much revolutionized my life as being a paperless system of organization. But the problem is that the iPad isn't powerful enough to handle the applications that I need to use. Or at least, it isn't available. I don't really know.

Either way, my idea is a NetBook. Sort of.

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but Hewlett-Packard released a touch NetBook last year. Link: HP Releases New Touchscreen Netbook and Touchsmart tm2 Convertible

My basic understanding is this: if we can hack HP NetBooks, we can certainly hack the TM2, couldn't we? Just outfit it with Lion and away we go, maybe with a few mods along the way. It's a Mac operating system on a tablet, and on top of that it's USB-integration.

I figure that since it's going to be a while before the music industry catches up with Apple (considering the fact that we're even worse off now individually than we ever were)* and creates some decent software for notation that makes reasonable sense and can connect to midi devices, we can do it.

*Note: Apple brags about the fact that they changed the entire music industry because of the iPod. Well, musicians don't like change. We just want to be left alone to play music in peace. It's taking us a while to figure out how to adapt.

So can someone tell me if this is a valiant effort? Or should I abandon the idea?

Sounds like a great idea! An iPad killer that runs Apple's own operating system. =)

If Apple really wanted the professional audio/musician field to swoon, they'd crank out another professional desktop Mac with six expansion slots to stuff full of pro audio and other gear. They had it with the IIfx, then the Quadra 900/950 (though those only had five slots) and again with the Powermac 9500/9600. Then for some greatly insane reason the beige G3's got hobbled with a mere three PCI slots.

Lots of expansion for lots of equipment! Has not been available from Apple since the 9600. Let's see a pro Mac with six x16 PCIe slots that can be filled with six cards all running at full x16 speed. Apple would again own the huge multi-monitor video industry, and do it even bigger. Remember six video cards and monitors with a IIfx? Six x16 PCIe cards with two monitors each would be... yummy, very yummy. The way Apple has configured PCIe in their desktop systems makes me think "WTH were they thinking when they designed this?". The controllers don't have enough bandwidth to run all the slots at their full capabilities. I don't know of any PC with two x16 slots that cuts them down to x8 if you install two x16 video cards. The whole point of having two x16 slots is to "slave" the cards together to get an effective x32 and double the performance.

So, did some research. I have found no tablet actually suitable for the task.

The tablet I'm looking for NEEDS usb connectivity like nothing else. I need to be able to hook a midi device up to it.

Realistically, all signs lead to 'spend the money, get a mac setup'.

Im trying to do the same with a samsung series 7 slate right now. I successfully installed osx lion retail and it was actually pretty easy. I got the sound and battery working.. out of box the bluetooth touch and pen were all recognized, as well as the USB and micro SD card slot. The only things i needed to get working were the resolution and wifi. It seemed to even have QE/CI but im not sure. Its esentially a macbook air 11" in a slate casing so it shouldnt be too hard.
I have to put the project on hold for another week because when partitioning my hdd in windows i messed it up somehow and now it wont boot wont even go into bios just says something about a boot disk. But i plan on exchanging it and being insanely careful with the partitioning. This slate seems to be the best option.

WOW. That's an awesome idea, and I'm glad you could steer me that way. A tablet already running Windows 7 (so you know it's powerful enough already)... that's a great idea, man.

    Two questions:

How powerful is the USB port? This is important. If all goes well, I could possibly hub it up and have a few different ones going at once.
Would I be able to wirelessly connect to printers, keyboards, mice, and monitors? If so, how would I go about doing it? If not, how can I go about a different way of connecting to hardware?

Thing is, I don't know computers very well but I'm an opportunist. If there's a way I can get a more powerful system, I'm totally down.

I'm glad someone is doing something that I thought of as well. Helps me to think I'm onto something.

Edit: Questions answered, and I'm shocked at how brilliant this machine is. My only question now is about battery life. One of the most appealing things about my iPad 2 is the excellent battery life I get. With this machine, it's saying it's going to be about seven hours. Is there a way I can get more than that?

And once this OS gets up and running, is there a way to get flash?
