    Default Is your iPhone not saving your EDGE/APN settings in 1.1.1 after restarts? SOLUTION!

    WinSCP into your iPhone and go here:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/

    There is a file called: UnkownCarrier.plist

    You need to edit the file like so, with your own APN in place of mine (internet3.voicestream.com - because I have t-mobile with VPN):

    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    	<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key>
    	<true/>
    	<key>CarrierName</key>
    	<string>Carrier</string>
    	<key>IntlDataRoamingSwitch</key>
    	<true/>
    	<key>ShowCallForwarding</key>
    	<true/>
    	<key>ShowCallForwarded</key>
    	<true/>
    	<key>ShowDialAssist</key>
    	<false/>
    	<key>SupportsNITZ</key>
    	<true/>
    	<key>VisualVoicemailServiceName</key>
    	<string>ACDS</string>
    	<key>apns</key>
    	<array>
    		<dict>
    			<key>apn</key>
    			<string>internet3.voicestream.com</string>
    			<key>password</key>
    			<string></string>
    			<key>username</key>
    			<string></string>
    		</dict>
    		<dict>
    			<key>apn</key>
    			<string></string>
    			<key>password</key>
    			<string></string>
    			<key>username</key>
    			<string></string>
    		</dict>
    	</array>
    	<key>voicemail_context</key>
    	<integer>1</integer>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Then the APN will be there when you restart the phone. Not sure if/how this affects people that switch chips between carriers, but I just use t-mobile and this works for me!

    NITZ (Network Identity and Time Zone) keeps your date and time synced to your carrier so you never have to set the clock on the phone. There's really no reason to disable it.

    I have no idea what DialAssist may be though...

    exellent tip merlingfx. I wondered what the heck was going on with the APN disappearing. I have to configure a duff APN as otherwise it will default to the one preprogrammed on the SIM which means it DOES connect via EDGE and I pay silly data charges. You fix sorts this out.

    Does this work for Cingular/AT&T? I tried this method

    1. Open /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist in your editor of choice.

    2. Look for the string "apn". This will be followed by "wap.cingular".

    3. Delete the "." in "wap.cingular".

    4. Restart the phone.

    5. When you try to connect via EDGE, it will fail.

    6. To reinstate EDGE service, open the file again and insert the "." between "wap" and "cingular", then restart the phone.

    But it didn't work....I still have the "E" symbol. I don't want to add the data plan because I'm almost done with my contract with AT&T, also I'm on FW 1.1 just bought the phone from Apple on Monday....any help would be great. Thanks

    *UPDATE* I just called AT&T and told them to disable edge. Now the "E" isn't there anymore....Hope this helps anyone with AT&T and no data plan.

    Although changin UnknownCarrier.plist works, it may cause you problem when roaming. 1.1.1 firmware support automatic carrier selection and that is the correct way to do it.

    Basically it works like this: once connected, the phone uses the network MCC-MNC (network id) to select the correct carrier settings. If it's not listed (by default only AT&T is) then the UnownCarrier.plist is selected.

    The right way to do it is to create the plist for your network.

    Thumbs up

    This is an easy method to fix. First add this source on installer, http://i.unlock.no
    then refresh go to install under unlocking tools install edge fix restart and done
    I had the same problem but after this it works now.

    ps. if you find this information useful please show your apreciation by contributing to my rep thanks

    You do not see the EDGE settings because you are probably on AT&T or running with a carrier settings copied from the AT&T one. The settings for AT&T do hide these settings.

    As I said before: DO NOT CHANGE UnknownCarrie.plist, but add one for your own carrier and do the proper settings, or your phone may not work properly while roaming or with another SIM card.

    for some reason i have something in my installer that instantly fixed the issue with the edge settings restarting everytime the phone was shut off. might want to do a quick search for the source of that since its basically a one-click fix.
