Default Wired laptop - can I ad hoc wifi to IPhone and let phone use net connection?

Is it possible? I have a MacBook Pro (though I use VMWare so I can run Vista too). Can I share my wired net connection from my laptop to the IPhone via an ad hoc wifi connection?

    Nice!

Was it easy to configure? Did you do it on a Mac or Windows?

Sure it works!!! Connect, SSH, FTP aso. Just look for the word IMPORTANT below ;-)
    I am on a macbook
open preferences-network. create a new location and just activate airport. conifure TCP/IP "manually" (sorry i am right now on a german os, but hope to remember). set ip-address to 192.168.2.1, set subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, set router to 192.168.2.1 and leave the rest blank and save the setting.

open the airport menu (on top of the desktop) on your macbook and select "Netzwerk anlegen", should be something like "create network". Choose any name of your choice and hit "options" in the dialog for WEP encryption, if you wanna make sure that just your iphone logs in. Type in password, retype it and choose 128 bit, the password has to have exact 13 characters, write it down and save the babe. (After using this connetion you may delete it).

Start your iPhone - settings->wifi and you will "see" your Wlan. log onto with the passwort. IMPORTANT: after logging in connectiontype set to DHCP, that aint work. so tap the blue arrow, set to manual and type 192.168.2.10 for IP, 255.255.255.0 for subnet mask and 192.168.2.1 for the router. leave the rest blank and enjoy your mini-wlan.

the private class c net 192.168.2.1-255 is just an example, you may choose any cause you have no connection to the outside world. After finishing work you may delete all or keep the location and settings for further usage

I followed your instructions exactly but was unable to connect to the internet on he IPhone. I am connected to my ad hoc wireless network I created with your instructions but Safari/You Tube etc dont work.

So my laptop (Mab book pro, Tiger 10.4 etc) has a wired ethernet connection with unlimited net access. I would like to share this internet connection to the IPhone. Is this possible? I guess I need to adjust some Mac network setting to allow this?

    Thanks,

    Neil
