Default Why voicemail notification won't work on v1.1.1

It seems that the voicemail notification problems we are all having in v1.1.1 are not related to the baseband or the firmware upgrade, in fact they are caused by both. The voicemail notification type messages are FLASH SMS which in the old baseband and firmware were handled differently. The baseband receives the message and passes it to the firmware, which in turn directs it to the correct application. The baseband is still pushing these types of messages, via the firmware, to the SMS app as it is not flagged as any different. Although this is a childish error, since ATT support video voice mail and not voice mail Apple doesn't need to care about this issue until the launch in the UK.
Ergo I think they're just doing it to annoy people using a non ATT SIM.
The short of it is that I doubt it will be worth while hacking both the baseband and the firmware to fix this and we'll sit and wait until the new release.

    ...
The Voicemail Notification (red dot) was not done through SMS. Service Providers transmit a small amount of data to the phone alerting it that there is a VM message. That will then trigger an even depending on the phone, in this case an iPhone.

They probably just removed the feature as the phone was not designed to be on other carriers.

From what I understand, from Vodafone (although their engineers may have been slinging me a line) their notification is passed via FLASH SMS. Either way, thinmk we're buggered on a simple fix.

Some carriers use flash SMS, some use an out-of-band GSM network voicemail notification, and some use both.

For the most part, iPhone users on those carriers who use flash SMS for voicemail notification have never received voicemail notifications in any version of the iPhone firmware. Flash SMS aren't supported by the iPhone, so hence no voicemail notifications. This includes Fido in Canada, although I'm not sure about others.

Those with GSM network-based voicemail notifications were mostly working fine in v1.0.2, but this has broken for some as of v1.1.1. Rogers in Canada is definitely an example of one that worked fine in v1.0.2 but has broken in v1.1.1.

It's also interesting to note that in some cases the signal to clear the voicemail indicator comes through fine, but the signal to set it is not processed by the iPhone properly in v1.1.1.

One interesting point is that Rogers uses both methods of voicemail notification -- a normal Rogers phone will show both a "You have 1 new voicemail SMS" and set the voicemail indicator, both as a separate process. On the basis of this, I'm wondering if it's possible that the flash SMS is somehow interfering with the normal voicemail notification process.

    very possibly
On vodafone we know receive a bizarre scrambled text message. With O2 i assume they have their systems ready for the official iPhone launch.

G_Squared. This isn't a bug. This was done intentionally by Apple. A quick look at what the BB does with these messages proves this. Re: Flash SMS (type 2 SMS) under 1.0.2 and 1.1.1. Unless I've missed something, there's no difference at all regarding how this these messages are/where handled in both FM/BB versions. They simply have never been supported. Re: the CA crowd. I know that for certain this works since there are two different options for VM Notification -- the data message and 2) traditional type 1 SMS messages. If something has changed here, it's very difficult for me to test since I'm far from Canada.

I am far from Canada too, and will be closer to you tomorrow (coming to France to watch the rugby). If England lose I will spend the rest of the weekend trying to work out the flow of the text message to see if there is a hack. Failing that we'll sit and wait for 1.1.2.
Thanks for your input on this.

are you guys saying that VM notification works in 1.0.2 in canada but will not in 1.1.1? Maybe we should sticky this somewhere? Some people might not want to upgrade because of that

On Rogers in Canada, myself and my co-worker both have unlocked iPhones. Mine is at 1.0.2 and voicemail notification works fine. His is 1.0.2 upgraded to 1.1.1. and it doesn't work.
