Also, as far as Apple goes, people using unlocked iPhones and are actively purchasing songs on iTunes are doing exactly what Apple needs. They want you to buy the phone, and they want you to buy music. As far as they're concerned, there's no need to kill the unlocked ones.

Of course, chances are the only reason they're updating the firmware to relock phones is to help preserve their contract with AT&T. I don't know the terms of their contract, but I'm guessing a huge fine or some other legal action would occur. So at the very least they have to provide the illusion that they are against unlocks.

Knowing the people I work with, if Apple is any similar, they don't really care at all.
