Exclamation Why Apple will NOT re-lock unlocked iPhones

    My theory is this:

Any mobile phone can be sold as SIM locked or SIM unlocked.

Normally the price of the phone is subsidised by the carrier on the understanding it is locked to their network, the customer signs a 2 year contract etc etc.

You can order an unlock code for Nokia N series from the operator for 15 pounds in the UK. But you are still tied into the airtime contract.

Apple iPhone is the same. They agreed to supply iPhones locked to ATT. They did that.

If users manage to unlock the phone, it doesnt void the agreement because the customer will still have to pay ATT for the remaining time.

If, a customer buys an iPhone without the contract with ATT, and if that customer manages to unlock the phone, Apple are not in any contractual obligation to re-lock the phone as the customer has NOT signed up to ATT.

This means that any future software updates will not re-lock the phone as the owner of the iPhone has not broken any laws or agreements, there were no agreements to break as they were not a customer of ATT !

Does this make sense ? Look - Nokia N series can be unlocked by the operator supplied codes. Nokia also provide OTA (over the air) software updates for the actual unit. None of these updates re-lock the phone ! They are not interested in who the carrier is ! Only the actual unit !

I am sure this will be the same - infact, I wouldnt be surprised if Apple release an unlock programme to save any potential return/repair costs on hacked phones.

Remember Bootcamp ? And what happened ? Apple released it after someone proved it could be done.

Apple are a cool company - and if they can sell more units, believe me, they will find a legal way of doing so.

Simple answer to strange on-air things:
If they lock random phones over the air they will be sued to death.
Second, which carrier with no iphone would be intrested in helping Apple to preasure their consumer unfriendly behaviour?

I closed the thread cause we don't need to discuss the coolness of apple in a iphone hacking forum.
