Exclamation When buying an iphone?? . . .

Hi, just had a question about buying an iphone from an apple shop here in the UK.

I understand that an O2 Locked UK Iphone can be Unlocked for us on any O2 Sim card. When i go into an apple shop and buy an iphone, do i have to sign up to the contract then? or sign any papers meaning i will go with O2? Or is it a normal buy method from the shop, bring home and then activate, or in our case jailbreak so it can be used on any o2 sim card so you dont have to sign up to the contract?

    Thank You

    Hi All, my first post...

I have simillar questions. A friend of mine is going to buy an iPhone for me this week in the US and then post to me (as a christmas gift) to Belgium.

He's planning to buy from an Apple store. When buying is it just the phone that is purchased, no sign-up? Does an AT&T SIM card come with the phone and if not do I need one should I have to go down the TurboSIM route (in case the 1.1.2 OTB unlocks don't materialise)?

Does he need to sign-up to AT&T then cancel the contract within 30 days?

What about the possibility of getting still a 1.1.1 phone? Are these still available if it's a low-volume dealer? How would one identify it? Could one even ask the shop if they had any or would that be letting the cat out of the bag?

Thanks in advance for you feedback

i do think that would be letting the cat out of the bag to be honest! but i watched a video on activation on the apple uk website and it shows when you first buy it and connect it to itunes on your computer is when the process comes up and you have to chose your plan (in UK case is the O2 packages) and give your details. And for a 1.1.2 at the moment the only way is the turbosim route, hopefully a 1.1.2 full unlock will become available soon as we hope 1.1.3 is released very near to the future, but thats all i know

Since I live in the UK but bought my iPhone in the US - i can answer both questions. You do not need to sign up to any contract if you buy them at the Apple store. Just pay your money and leave with the phone. In the US you have to buy with a credit card - no cash purchases allowed. I think the UK is the same but some people have said that the Carphone Warehouse allows cash purchases so I am not sure if anything has changed.

You can bypass activation (AT&T/O2 screens when docking for the first time) so there is no need to sign up with any contract. The only problem that 1.1.2 OOTB phones have at the moment is they can't be sim unlocked.
