What to do at apple store?
What do you do/say at the apple store when they ask you for your phone number and your phone is unlocked?
I recently went to the apple store in New York trying to get a phone replaced and it was restored and unactivated. They said that the serial number and crap wasnt activated with at&t and the warranty hasnt begun... wtf? What do I do haha?

You either sign a contract with AT&T if you EXPECT support form Apple or you stay out of Apple stores. It's that simple

Yep, that's the unfortunate truth to all of this.

I wonder what would happen if you gave your unlocked phone to a friend with an ATT contract with iphone, and had him take it in and pretend it was his, would they know?

No, I don't think so cuz they looked at the serial number and they said that the serial number was activated with ATT so i guess if they don't check that... your good.

What if you take it to them with an AT&T prepaid sim in it?

When i had touch screen problems and was refused twice at the apple store, i called apple support and told them I was giving the iPhone away as a gift and i opened it up to test it/activate it and i noticed (insert problem here). If it is a problem that would not be apparent unless the phone was activated, just tell them you put it to charge overnight and it became very, very hot to the touch and you have kept it off since in fear of overheating.
There is no reason they wouldn't send you a box to get your iPhone repaired. Problem fixed.
