    Default What to buy.....Help?

    Hey Everyone,

I'm looking at buying a iPhone off eBay and with all the updates and news in the recent weeks I'm sorta lost in what to look for...So my questions would be these...

1 - dumb question...does the iPhone have the ability to dial/receive calls currently?

2- Whats the going US $ rate for an iPhone...generally.

3- What version of firmware should I be looking for?

3.1 - If I get the version of firmware answered by question #3, do I have to do anything else? (ie. further hacks or programming?)

    Thanks alot!!

nothing really matters as long as it works, everthing can be unlocked and made to work, firmware can be downgrade if needed and so can the baseband, try to get it cheap of someone reliable, about 560 USD is the cheapest Ive seen em go for on ebay + postage. If you can find a friend in USA You Can get Em for about
    540 including postage, from apple

Ohhh okay! Well I live in Canada, so the other question is just wondering if it will work with Rogers? And if Rogers 'cares' that someone is using an unlocked iPhone on their network?

Donnie, as you know, the cost of the iPhone is $399+tax which will add about $30+ to the cost of the phone. If you buy from Apple, you will not have to pay shipping. Ebay price is around $100 over this "cost" as sellers obviously wants to make a profit (though eBay and Paypal takes a huge chunk out of this "profit").
If you know someone who can unlock, buy directly from Apple and then ask your friend to unlock. If not, well...your option would be to buy from eBay. Or, send me a private message and we can work something out, i.e., I can put the item on ebay as a private auction item and send the link to you to purchase the item. This way you and I are both protected.

If I were to buy an iPod directly from Apple off their website...how hard would it be to unlock the iPhone by looking at guides/tutorials from development websites?

If you follow everything to the tee, it should be straightforward. Since the new 1.1.1 hack is just out of the oven, I suggest that you wait a little and see if it is safe to use. I read sporadic report of the latest anySim is unstable on 1.1.1. Most of current unlock methods are on 1.0.2. I also use the good old method of iUnlock from iphone.unlock.no. Only difference is, I have to downgrade 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 before unlocking. In short, if you have some technical know-how, you can do this.
