*** The following is for a dead touch screen / if you can use any of the info here then great ***
So, one day out of the blue my iPhone screen's touch interface went dead. Not a strip, not the top, not the bottom, the entire thing. I spent the next 2 days trying everything I could find in these forums that was relevant. To answer any obvious questions:
- Yes, did a restore
- Yes, did one in DFU mode
- Yes, "reburbished" - erase baseband, restore which uploads fresh version
- Yes, tried the wifi mac address thing...
- Really, it was touch since I couldn't actually interface with the iPhone besides through the cable.
So here's how I got service...after 6 months of use. It was unlocked, jailbroken, activated through various different methods.
I live in Canada, so getting service is not as simple as walking into the store - though I was willing to drive over the border to get service. The obvious issues are, it has never been activated through AT&T, I've owned it for 6+ months, it has signs of use and normal wear and tear.
The advise on the forum says:
- Take it to the store and don't leave until they repair.
- Tell them that warranty is not dependent on activation
- Restore, do this do that.
Here are the facts:
- Apple has records of which iPhones have been activated through AT&T. They can bring up this information based on your serial number or phone number AT THE STORE or OVER THE PHONE
- Apple website clearly says "Apple's warranty is not dependent on activation of the phone"
- Apple store policy as well as over the phone support policy IS "We do not service unactivated iPhones."
- In the event they do service the phone, you are REQUIRED to activate on the spot.
How to get service?
Call their support line. They will immediately ask you for a phone number or case number. Obviously you don't have one cause you never activated in the first place. Say you just opened the box and noticed that the touch screen was dead. You tried putting it into restore more (ie. tried to trouble shoot yourself by finding info on the apple support website) and uploaded the newest firmware, but still not working. They'll know by the serial that you purchased over 6 months ago. Say you're an iPhone developer, it's for work, you've registered for the program and waiting response, it's for development purposes, you're only starting to work on it now.
They'll pass you on to a manager...if they don't, ask for one. Say the same thing.
They'll bring up if it's hacked or modded, they'll know and will simply return it. ***back to that in a bit*** Say it hasn't been hacked, it's out of the box and the screen is dead.
They'll also mention the no service if not activated bit...tell them the apple website clearly states warranty is NOT dependent on activation...
they WILL give.
good luck.
BTW, if you live in Canada, you'll need a US address to get service. Otherwise you're great.
How they can tell it's been hacked or modded:
I would be guessing here, but these are the areas I restored to factory and warranty was honoured.
- Restore
- erase and reflash the baseband
- if you use pwnage, you'll have to get the OS Bootloader and the BB Bootloader back to factory...do a search
