ive tried various combinations with optus including wap.optus.net.au, internet, and fast

none of these seem to work... any ideas.???

anyone been successful with gettin gprs to work... edge?

Only Telstra has EDGE in Australia.

Telstra has EDGE (2.5G) but Optus and Vodafone and their affiliates have GPRS (2G). GPRS is about half the speed of EDGE, but it does indeed work on the iPhone.

So, go to: Settings > General > Network > EDGE

For Optus use the APN: internet

For Telstra use the APN: telstra.internet

For Vodafone use the APN: vfinternet.au

And enjoy looking up Google Maps while stuck in traffic!

I wouldn't even bother with anything less than HSDPA. The days of dialup speed is long gone for me.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

EDGE is okay for:

Mail
Google Maps (actually very good for loading map data, it's surprising)
Safari checking mostly text based news sites, such as http://www.smh.com.au/text/
Safari checking Wikipedia, blogs updates, etc.
Weather widget
Stocks (enter ASX codes followed ".AX" and you'll have access to all Australian stocks, eg, BHP.AX = $39.40 on Friday close, the All Ordinaries is "^AORD", works very well.)

People saying iPhone is useless without 3.6 Gbps HSDPA are bigoted. Yes, it would be nice, but it's not completely unusable without it.

For the record - the Virgin Mobile settings are:

APN VirginInternet

No other settings required. This is different to the VirginWAP setting they provide for other phones but works just as well. They have two fantastic data deals - $5/50MB and $10/300MB, which is way better than the others (bar 3 of course). Of course, at GPRS speeds, it is small consolation, but better than nothing.

password: [blank]

and

APN: internet
username: guest
password: guest

but I can't get it to work... any ideas?
