Although most ppl havent heard of one when i mention it, some have but i cant find anyone with details.

I originally saw it mentioned on the bottom of this TUAW post (at update 2) but they dont have details yet apparently. http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/15/iphon...e-unlock-tool/

i searched the forums here and this was the only relevant thread i think

A "hack" to do what? This depends on your service provider and your plan being provisioned with it....

This feature is totally carrier dependant. As far as I know, ATT is the only carrier to support it.

There is an iniciative for the hack and some nice workarounds.

Basically they consist of changing your call forwarding settings for the "unreachable" option so it points to a VOIP inbound number (i.e. Skype-In).

In the case of Skype, you are able to download the voicemail messages as files. You would have to create a daemon to run in the background that keeps checking for new messages and whenever you get a new message, it downloads to the phone and puts it in the visual voice mail pool.

I have an alternative idea that includes a server. A server (instead a daemon in the phone) would keep checking for new messages. After getting the new message the serve would convert the message into the iPhone format. The this server would use the same protocol used by the orginal visual voicemail to make the iPhone download the new message just like ti were downloading it through ATT. I think it is possible to fool the iPhone this way because I have seen the way ATT notifies the phone of a new message. It simply sends an SMS notification message containing information about the message inclunding hte download URL.
The server part is easy. The reverse engineering that needs to be done is just to understand this SMS based protocol that ATT uses to notify the visual voice mail software. After understanding everything, we'll just need to spoof those SMS messages and make the iPhone download the message from our servers instead of ATT's. I believe this downloading is done though a modified HTTP, which should be easy to imitate. Also, I believe the audio format for the messages is already known by the iPhone dev community.

Summing up, we just need to:

    1) Reverse engineer the SMS based protocol
    2) Find a way to spoof the protocol
    3) Set up a server to interact with the voicemail box from some VOIP service (i.e. Skype-In)

    Cheers.
