Default US iPhone in the UK after Nov 9th

I'm a UK resident in the US at the moment and just wondering - If I buy a US iPhone and use it unlocked for a while, will I then be able to flash it with the proper UK firmware after Nov. 9th and use it on O2 like one that was bought here?

Or in fact - will there be no such thing as UK firmware? Will 1.1.1 just accept AT&T or O2 sims?

In anycase - once it's unlocked can I still go back an activate it in iTunes like it should be properly when the O2 iPhone tariffs become availble?

(Or should I not be so impatient and wait until it comes out here!!!)

if the fw 1.1.1 locks the baseband down, then yea.. you will surely havto reactivate with itunes... and i definitely recommend that you buy an iphone from US cause its $430 with the tax (8gb) and if you can get through the customs then u wont have to shell out the extra $100 or something for the UK one with VAT

Thank you - so just to confirm - it's not difficult to wipe it back to scratch and then activate it properly in iTunes on November 9th?

I think the best answer is that no-one will know til November.

Based on the mobile phone industry, its unlikely that any US AT&T iPhone will accept O2 sim's, even once it is upgraded, as they will come out of the factory locked to AT&T or O2 or whomever, depending on what market they will be sold in. I can see future software updates coming in US or Intl flavours.

Wether or not an AT&T phone can be wiped and updated to run the International software remains to be seen.

but is the phone sim locked or itunes software locked

wasnt it the case where older at&t cards didnt work with the iphone in the US, it had to be tinkered with to get them to work

Hmm... I don't want to end up with a duff phone in november or Apple break all the unlocks and so not be able to upgrade the firmware later.

Sadly patience maybe in order here... How dull!

have some faith on the dev team... all steve said was they have to stay one step ahead of the team... they didnt say anything that they will stay ahead... i have full faith in the dev team and i believe they will figure out a way so that the baseband is not updated.

I think that in theory it should be possible to force an upgrade of the baseband, therefore changing the provider. Who thinks its likely that the updater will recognise the serial no as a US one?
