Default US iPhone as legitimite EU iPhones after 11/9 with EU contract?

    Hey,

right now I'm using a unlocked US iPhone FW 1.0.2.

I'd like to ask the guys who worked on the whole lock thing what you think of using these US iPhones with a new iPhone contracts available in Germany or UK on 9th Nov - without any hacks perhaps by flashing with a new virgin firmware.

Is there any lock especially on ATT in the US devices?

I know this will need to get a iPhone-able SIM without an iPhone with nobody knowing if this will be possible (pls correct me when I'm wrong).

I'm sure there are 100s or 1000s outside which would at least consider to get a legal iPhone contract but won't want(ed) to wait for the EU release or simply tried to save money by importing US devices...

    Thanks

    Til

I worked out that the contract being offered by O2 isn't actually that bad.

    200 Mins
    200 Texts
Unlimited Data (worth 5 per month - well it is on Three)
The Cloud WiFi Subscribtion (worth 6.99 per month)

I just WILL NOT sign up to an 18 month contract.

At the moment my iPhone is just a glorified iPod Touch, but I'm in no rush to get the phone part working on it as I've already got a Three contract which doesn't expire till the end of the year.

I cancelled my Pay Monthly Orange SIM before I even used it after I had it confirmed that their "Unlimited" data plan is only 30Mb per month

Josh, I think the plans are fair regarding the includes possibilities, too.

To make clear my question again:
How are my chances to turn my US iPhone to a regular activated iPhone with a T-Mobile Germany Plan after 11/9?

Speaking as someone with unlocked iPhone using Vodafone in the UK, would have thought that unless you "upgrade" to 1.1.1, your chances were very high.

Dont forget however that their "unlimited" data is actually capped.

    You get 200MB.

Thats all. Then you are "out of bundle" and get charged at their full data rate. You get charged per K.

Otherwise I agree it doesnt seem too bad.

Vodafone has better deals for less money. Just need an unlocked iphone....

    Are you sure?

In the Q&A session after the presentation, O2 CEO, Matthew Key was asked "does unlimited usage truly mean unlimited?"

    Key's response:

There is a limit: 1,400 internet pages per day would break the deal as part of fair usage agreement.

1,400 pages a day is quite a bit of data. Do you really need more than this? It's EDGE... getting that much would be time-consuming and painful!

Quite. If you do the maths that's 2 pages per minute 24/7. Well assuming you want to actually sleep and eat sometime let's halve the time available - that's one page every 15 seconds every spare waking moment of your life. Can Edge even deliver one page every 15 seconds ?

The whole No. Pages thing is bullshit marketting speak. Say I actually want to listen to some mp3s or browse flickr that 200meg can quickly disappear.

UK users will be better of with T-mobile and their unlimited data.

Latest rumour was that T-Mobile in Germany is selling the iPhone exclusively, meaning that you can't even get an iPhone through the german Apple web shop or any other independent dealer like Gravis for example.
Meaning: it would be impossible to put your hands on a german iPhone without valid contract with T-Mobile. I also heard that for the first batch of iPhones, T-Mobile will allow only new contracts, no renewal due to limited supply at the beginning. Sounds a bit fishy to me and it may not be true but I pass this rumour on, just in case.

Another rumour I heard: T-Mobile Germany is going to offer a special unlimited EDGE data plan coming with the iPhone, apparently this is a standard option, you can't change it. Visualmail is also going to work and apparently T-Mobile plans one or two other "goodies" too to attract subscribers.
Bad news is: although T-Mobile seems to offer an unlock code for an additional 99 Euro for their current locked phones, it seems that it won't happen with the iPhone.
I can't believe this because T-Mobile ALWAYS has delivered unlock codes for their phones but maybe Apple didn't want this to happen.

I may get my T-Mobile iPhone on November 9th and if T-Mobile offers the unlock option for 99 Euro, I go for it. I need a new contract for my daugther anyway, so I get the iPhone and she gets the number.

So you are saying it will be impossible to get an iPhone plan for an already unlocked iPhone?
