Hi all, new to the forum. A friend of mine has just returned from australia with an iphone 3GS which she purchased there. She wants to use it in northern ireland (uk). Does anyone know exactly what I need to do in order to achieve this?

If its really from Australia then just pop the sim out and pop the UK sim in and it works

Australia iphones are already factory unlocked so theres no hacking required

This is not 100% true..

If the iPhone was purchased on a contract in Oz (or it is prepaid), it is locked to that carrier. If you have completed the contract or charged up enough credit on a prepaid iPhone - you can request an official unlock from the carrier.

If the iPhone was purchased at an Apple store in Australia - outright (and paid AUS$1040 for the 32GB) then it is already officially unlocked. That is what I have.

This is really quite similar to the current situation with iPhones in the UK.

3GS requires different approaches to jailbreak depending on iOS version you have upgraded it to. What state is it in now and you have access to the Australian SIM card?

If you want to use your iphone 3GS in uk then you must have unlock your iphone.You can unlock your iphone safe and eaiser using Remote unlocking method.To get these service visit Classicunlocking.com here you need to specify your Network provider to which it is locked,IMEI number of your iphone.Here they unlock your iphone using latest iTunes software.
