Default Unique problem, WALD 3GS, couldnt do anything except restore, need data!!!

Hey guys, ill get right too it.

I have a 3GS. It has iOS 4.2.1. Facebook was slow so I deleted it, upon reinstalling, the install hung. I rebooted only to get WALD. The only way to get the computer (win7) to recognize it was to put it into either DFU or Recovery Mode.

I tried creating a custom IPSW with make_noerase_ipsw_r1.exe that was floating on the net. This created the noerase-restore ipsw, but iTunes wouldnt accept it because it wasnt signed. I tried signing it with iFaith but that didnt work, iFaith didnt like the ipsw. However iTunes wouldnt even recognize legit IPSW's. So iFaith was used to make a legit iOS 4.2.1 IPSW signed, and that was used to restore (format) the iphone. Now it boots just fine.

Heres the prob, we have 6 months of new notes, pictures and phone numbers since last backup. If nothing else, I'd like to recover the pictures.

NOTE: the 3gs WAS NOT ever jailbroken previously. I have since jailbroke it with greenp0ison still on 4.2.1 to gain access to the root file system. This is the only reason I have JB'd this phone.

I have read about creating a disk image using ssh, and dd but to no avail.

So basically Im sitting with a factory fresh, 4.2.1, jailbroken iphone, but I dont want to use it and risk overwriting the "deleted" data because I know the data is still there, just waiting to be recovered.

In windows or linux for that matter you could always look at the deleted partitions and see what data was on them, as long as you hadn't started populating the disk with data. I have not put any files on the iphone, other than the restore, and jail break.

Ideas? Like i said, if all i could recover was the pictures id be happy.

    Help please!

As you have "restored" the phone, you have wiped the data. There is no way to get the data back now.

The big issue is that the iPhone 3GS (and newer) use an encryption key to hardware encrypt the data on the NAND itself, this encryption key is thrown away and a new one created when you "restore". So the old data is on the NAND but you have lost the key (i'm pretty sure it's not in your backup - unless you encrypt the backup).

Plus the hardware implements a flash memory write levelling so the physical allocation of flash memory sectors isn't guaranteed to be the same after you reformatted the device.

You should have used msft.guy's "turn a restore into an update to the same iOS version" approach. Mostly iPhone hacking: Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices

It's probably too late now. You could try and politely ask the iPhone linux people for help, they are digging deep into this area to get iPhone linux supported on the 3GS and newer devices - so they know the most about the technical implementation of this outside of Apple.

was the noerase ipsw creator that i mentioned in my post. It does not create legit signed ipsw's.

    Oh well

A very important point... no ipsw creator except iTunes makes legit personalised IPSWs.

The IPSWs that noerase ipsw creator makes can only work "transparently" with an iOS version that Apple is still signing SHSH blobs for.

I'd guess you could also use it with a cached SHSH blob (or maybe even an iFaith blob) if you started with the iPhone in Pwned DFU mode (pwned with limera1n exploit)

The technical background is that none of the SHSH blob caching tools bother to cache the SHSH for the update ramdisk. It is this ramdisk that is used by the noerase ipswcreator. The SHSH blobs for both update and restore ramdisks are not saved on the iDevice, so iFaith cannot retrieve these later.

The limera1n bootrom exploit allows the booting of unsigned ramdisks on your device. However you still need a valid SHSH blob for the signed images that are saved to the device (and the SHSH blob retrieved by iFaith should be enough for this [assuming the SHSH blobs are still intact on the device])

This is my understanding of the situation. I haven't tested any of this.

    So the general consensus is....

After a full restore on a Week 45+ Iphone 3GS, the data _IS_ irretrievable or is _MOST LIKELY_ irretrievable?

Ok using VMplayer, Ubuntu and a list of commands I was able to make a 14.2gb user partition image and a 760ish meg os partition.

Like cryogenics I hope there is a way to save me in the future.... for now ill archive these images.
