ULTIMATE iPhone vs iPod Touch debate!?
I already bought the iPod Touch online.
But I'm having second thoughts about the iPod Touch versus the iPhone.
It's not too late to cancel my order and buy the iPhone instead.
I live in an area where Verizon is the only service that works at all. I really have absolutely no interest in using the iPhone as a phone. Ever. Is there any way to turn off the GSM radio and phone stuff completely?
I'm mainly interested in Safari and Mail. And the iPod Touch doesn't even HAVE Mail. I'm sure you awesome hackers will find a way to get it on there, but should I rely on hackers getting Mail onto the Touch? I guess I could just use webmail with Safari, but that sounds extremely lame.
But the iPhone is actually available right now. So I could have like a whole month more time fiddling with the iPhone or I could spend all that time waiting for the iPod Touch. Waiting is no fun.
Also, the iPhone has speakers built in. That could be really handy so I don't have to lug around headphones everywhere I go. Also is has bluetooth so I could potentially use wireless headphones. It'd be awesome to watch quick videos with sound with people without having to share headphones.
The iPhone has a microphone. You could potentially use that mic to record voice memos or something. Better than nothing.
The camera could come in handy. Why not carry around a crappy no-zoom no-flash camera everywhere you go. Better than nothing I guess.
The iPod Touch is much more likely to be extremely hackable and unblocked. I really doubt that it'll be very locked down at all. The reason why the iPhone is so locked is because of AT&T. But then again, they might have to lock the Touch too for some reason.
The iPod Touch will officially be able to be used as a flash drive. My guess is that it'll be the whole drive that gets mounted and you'll be able to hack around in all its internals and everything. That would really simplify hacking.
But then there's the issue of the future. You guys have awesomely hacked the iPhone up to do your evil bidding. But how much of my time is it going to take to keep hacking the thing to work without AT&T? And does YouTube really not work unless you actually use AT&T?
I've had a really bad experience with my old Treos. I ended up wasting more time trying to get the thing to do anything than actually using the thing at all. And everything on it was just completely useless. All the apps you could add were all like $40 each and crashed constantly. Ugh, don't get me started on how much that sucked. I did manage to hack a Sprint Treo 650 to work on Verizon.
How likely is it that the iPod Touch can be hacked to use the iPhone software like Mail and Editable Calendar?
Will the iPhone ever be able to be used as a flash drive?
How reliable are the iPhone hacks?
What else should I be considering that I haven't yet considered?
You guys are obviously biased toward the iPhone since most of you spent $600 on the thing and don't want to feel dumb for preferring the Touch
I have the same debate (don't really need to use the phone functions but want it as a ipod/pda) but I went for the iphone instead of the itouch. One critical feature for me is the microphone inside the iphone. This means possibility of VOIP. As far as hackable, I don't see why the itouch is more or less hackable than the iphone. (AT＆T just wants to lock u into their contract not so much whatever apps u put into it.) It really depends on how many developers out there are interested in writing apps for the device. Right now, I'd say Iphone has the upper hand. iTouch seems to have a subset of functions that the Iphone has - whatever it can do, the phone can do and more. Go for the iphone unless u want the 8mm thinness of the iTouch, i'll say.
Ok. I think I convinced myself on the iPhone as I was writing that post.
I just cancelled my order for the iPod Touch and placed an order for the iPhone with next day shipping. I'd just drive to go get one, but the closest apple store is 3 hours away, and I really don't have 6 hours to kill tomorrow :'(
Oh the waiting is going to kill me! :!
yeap I'm with the same question but I'm going for the iPhone for sure, why? well I see the iphone more like a phone w/ a lot of memory (and all the others cool functions) and I keep my music collection in my 160GB archos or my PC, and just the playlist that i want to hear on the ipod
