If the package is marked as a gift, and declared as a 'phone' but with a value of less than a certain amount ($35?) then it attracts no customs import duty or VAT.

Doing this is basically fraud. I received my iPhone from a good eBay seller who did this for me, and paid no import duty. I won't publicise his name here, I'm not sure if he's still selling them, but it was very early and one of the first batch hitting eBay for UK export. I obviously gave him good feedback but omitted 'cheers for defrauding UK customs, mate!'

The seller is taking a risk by doing this, so if you buy from someone willing to do it then don't put them at risk by advertising it. Customs import duty and VAT on top of the duty on a phone worth $400 (or $900 in my case) comes to a lot of money - it's best avoiding it if possible.

iPhones are cheaper now, but back then it'd be possible to fly to NY and back from London for the cost of the import duty and VAT if you actually paid it in full...

Cheers guys, Do you remember the shipping company and generally how long does it take to arrive in London.
