Default UK Iphone or import from US

    Hi,

So its 269 out Nov 6th.

The only UK providers with EDGE are Orange and O2. Orange have better coverage. As of today, o2 does not cover Reading, Berkshire - or at least my work colleagues EDGE phone doesnt pick it up.

So - do I import a US one via EBay which will cost more or less 269 then sign up to some Orange tarrif OR just accept I cannot get decent EDGE coverage and go with T_Mobile or vodafone? Or I could wait for o2 in the UK and pay them 45 a month for 18 months (I need more than 200 mins).

None of the options sound appealing....

Buy one now, unlock it and use it on T-Mobile Flex'n Web which offers unlimited web browsing.
Vodafone only have 120mb a month for 7.50, then you pay extra.

Second this. BUY NOW from the US and unlock it. God knows how hard it will be to unlock the new iPhones.

plus SIM only plans are nice and cheap in the UK - i'm buying my phone from america and then using a SIM only contract. Im not paying for a phone, then not getting a discounted contract - what a rip off! I also dont want to risk the fact that the EU phones will have the new firmware on them - with no confirmation of whether they'll be unlockable

i appreciate the feedback - but this means having a GPRS only IPhone. Mind you with only 30% coverage in the UK most IPhone customers will have GPRS only! Id rather not join Orange which I believe has 'ok' EDGE coverage...

    What a load of rubbish.

Everyone here has been talking about EDGE v 3G. The real question is - GPRS v 3G.

i have a Blackberry Pearl now - GPRS is fine for email, but Im guessing its not at all fine for web browsing except if you REALLY need to look at something.

Im having some second thoughts about the whole thing now. :-(

No HSDPA and on a network with dreadful EDGE coverage... I'll keep my current (3G) phone and use my Palm T5, thanks.

No wonder they include unlimited data; it's not like anybody's going to be able to use it anyway!

Anybody determined to use an iPhone in the UK will want to use an unlocked one (can't see why it matters if it's UK or US model, warranty will be less of an issue with a UK model) on Orange.

i would buy one now, just for for the fact of not having 1.1 firmware which most likely will be on the uk iphones. and just for the sake of clarity: the so called "data flatrate" which o2 claims...in fact it has an actuall daily limit of 1400 website requests. this may not sound that little but fact is, it's NOT a flatrate. especially if you're considering tethering and using your iphone as a datamodem for using it with your laptop.
long talk short, buy one now, unlock it and choose a provider with some atractive dataplan with a REAL flatrate.

But whats the point of having a decent data package on a phone which will only be capable of GPRS speeds (for example T-Mobiles excellent web n walk)?

In addition I have just read that the IPhone doesnt suport voice dialing... which makes it useless for all car phone kits.

I am not on here to bash on the IPhone - I own a Macbook Pro, 2 Ipods (inc a new 160Gb classic) - I like Apple. But I was assuming the following would be announced today:

    1. 8GB and EDGE (3G was never going to happen)
    2. O2 tarrifs that reflect the price of the phone -either cheaper tarrifs or handset subsidy (I know they didnt do that in the US, but this is a different market)
    3. O2 would announce they have the best EDGE system in Europe - 80% + coverage and a chance of actually getting the faster speeds EDGE can deliver.

So now I am left with possibly buying a US phone and use it on T-Mobile in the UK. I will have a 1Gb (or is it 3GB?) data package to use with my GPRS phone... terrific.

that's actually my point. a real flatrate with a provider which supports edge of course. so far i know o2's edge coverage is not that terrific from what i've heard.
i mean using the REAL internet, which safari does (no wap stripped down internet) is literally unusable (average time to load a popular site is about 5 minutes) with gprs.
