    Question UK iPhone

    Its coming.... eeeeek.

Here I am in the UK and I have had one for nearly two months already. My friends love it. I love it. It is an amazing piece of kit.

    Free WifiHot spots?
I notice that all iPhones MAC addresses start: 00:1C:B3 including T3's 1.1.2 UK iPhone; Official UK iPhones on O2 network will get free WiFi Cloud Hotspot access. Do you think they will blanket enable for access every device that starts with those MAC address details? I would love that.

    Activation Only from now on?
I am on O2 network in the UK at the moment. So hopefully once 1.1.2 has been cracked I wont have to worry about unlocking my baseband everytime a new one is released. I should only have to wait for the activation hack; which is normally alot quicker in coming.

    Visual Voicemail?
Also, being an O2 guy it would be nice if I could benefit from some visual voicemail.

    Bolt-On advice?
I am currently paying about 15 a month for my contract sim and some free minutes. I only get 100K worth of data with this. This last month I have managed to rack up 20 on data alone. Anyone got any good ideas for cunning bolt-on packages? Is there a bolt-on that would give me GRPS data as well as some hot spots ?

    Thoughts? Opinions? Flames?

    useless information...

you did want someone to flame you didn't you

on a more serious note, you might still have to unlock your device everytime an update comes, unless apple decides to give all iphones the same firmware or someone figures out how to update the uk fw on us cells...

regarding wifi access, i have no idea as to how they will actually implament it, but from what i have seen in my travels to the us, they might have you sign in at the hotspot, the username is usually your phone no. and i have no idea what the password is, maybe they will tie that thing up with a new contract??? (so if you sign up for a new iphone contract you should be able to use the free wifi)

I dont see why you wouldnt be able to flash the UK firmware on to a US phone. They cant afford to change the hardware for each country they release into.

I also suspect it would be foolish to allow any MAC address starting with a certain sequence because it is very easy to fake a MAC address on most devices. Here's hoping they are stupid tho.

There is no such a thing as a "UK firmware".

    Good question

For the clouds ipod touch service you just register with the mac address - i'd happily pay the 3.99 a month but it fixes the first digits of the mac address so you cant register anything but a touch

So fingers crossed they'll use a similar method for non UK iphones then we can all get free wifi

The first 24bits of a MAC address are the HW vendors OUI. Thats why they are the same. They are issued to the vendor of the device. I don't think thats how the cloud will identify a US / UK iPhone based on that info.

If ref to the 3.99 ipod touch deal.....

You can use a unix command to set your computers mac address until the next reset of the phone.

Clone the address to start with the ipod touch first characters and then use the rest of your iphone mac address..

I have read that openBSD wont let you change your MAC address without a plugin. Any ideas please. Easy ones !!!!

No plugin, do it straight from the phone using terminal.
