Cool [TUTORIAL] Create a Custom Ringtone for your iPhone

How to create a ringtone for your iphone

This tutorial illustrates how easy it is to create a ringtone using an iMac. The Software that I am using is Wiretap Studio from Ambrosia Software Inc, however the process can be achieved with any Audio editing package. It can also be achieved using a Garage band and iTunes (where you create your piece of music in Garage band and then export). I like Wiretap because it provides a number of very nice and cool features and also allows you to convert your sample to acc format with ease. It also employs lossless technology.

Ringtones on the iPhone have a .m4r extension, but in reality are simply an .acc file format. The .m4r extension is what tells itunes that it is actually a ringtone.

    1. You need to record an audio file within the likes of garage band or source a royalty free file from the net. I used a skype conversation I recorded with wiretap.

    2. Load your audio file into editing software. Within this software locate the section that you want to use as the ring tone and delete everything else either side of it. Keep the ring tone to less than 30 seconds.

    3. Save this ring tone as an acc file and use a different file name (than you started with)

    4. Export to your desktop, highlight with the mouse and then get info (Apple+I key combination)

    5. Under the section where it refers to extension, change the extension from .m4a to .m4r and hit enter. Click use .m4r if your MAC asks.

    6. Now double click the file and it will play in itunes. It also appears in the ringtone section and next time you sync your iphone it will be synced.

    Enjoy

just use ibrickr......edit an mp3 to less than 30 sec....... save it...and let ibrickr do the rest
much easier no renaming to m4r needed

Yes, but this assumes that you have a jailbroken iphone. I agree it is much easier, but if someone doesn't want to jailbreak the above works perfect.

it should be noted that this only works with itunes 7.3 or EARLIER with an iphone thats 1.0.2 or EARLIER

    OR

itunes 7.5 with an iphone with 1.1.2

people on 1.1.1 CAN NOT use this method, i segguest the mecca patch method.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the clarification. I assumed that since ringtones was only introduced recently that anyone wanting to do this would have the relevent versions.

Is it itunes 7.5 you are using?

Also I assume you have saved as an acc file (m4a) and then changed the extension using the get info option to m4r. Did you double click the m4r file to import to itunes ringtone section?

    Unhappy Ringtone Trouble Need Help

I have a 1.1.2. otb already jailbroken and updated to 1.1.2. i followed several tutorial all over the net, and what i did is the following:
1.- i took the mp3 files used nero wave editor to trim it to 30 seconds (about 500 kb each)
2.- i open them with i tunes and converted each file to AAC
3.- i manualy changed its extension to .m4r (windows, folder options, show hidden file extensions)
4.- added the new file to i tunes (it appears in the ringtone section), and i sync it with my iphone (the files appear in sounds, custom ringtone secion)

Now my problems is even though the files appear and i can select it for my new ringtone it will not play, all other ringtones play except my custom ringtones, i even tried calling myself to check (*#307#, 0, accept, hold, you guys know the deal,)
thanks any thoughts or help woud be appretiated
    Peter

To be truthful I'm at a loss with this one. I don't have an iPhone to check (I used a friends the other day).

I have not tried it on a PC only on a MAC, but I can't imagine thats the problem?

If you double click the ring tone in your iTunes, does it Play?

If not then the problem occurs before you get to that section. When I tried this I stated with a m4a file (acc) and trimmed the waveform to less than 30 seconds, saved it and then changed the name to m4r. My understanding is that m4a and m4r are the same file format just iTunes recognises them as different types of files.

Clarify you can hear the ringtone in itunes first.

iv had that problem aswell, for what ever reason certain mp3 files will refuse to play as ringtones on the phone. what i did was i whent on the net and downloaded the song and re tried the same procedure and then i worked.

as well id like to add that you actually dont need any sound editing software, set itunes to convert to AAC then in info change the start/end to the 30 seconds you want, now convert that song to AAC and you will only get that 30 second snipit itunes will leave the original file there aswell you just have to take out the start/stop change you made
