Concerning the OP, not the dude in trouble above me:

I felt like throwing out an FYI:
You can cut out all of that copy/paste and command line junk and simply open up master.passwd as a text document in iFile (touch master.passwd and select to open in the text viewer).

From there you can easily edit your password hash following previous instructions.

    In summary:
    1. Instal iFile
    2. Navigate in iFile to /etc
    3. Make backup of master.passwd if you want.
    4. Open master.passwd in text viewer.
    5. Put in new password hash for both root and mobile.
    6. Save.

    Hi honza kabut

I been on line from 10:00 am to about 9:00 pm. No one had solution until I stumbled on this site and post. I saw vids that 5 yr old posted to a pass word recovery that had a virus attached to it. To 21 pages to fix the problem! One thing the do make it hard if you forget it. Solution tattoo my new password it to my a__! When I saw your post it took less than a minute. I was so grateful when Rock said you need to change alpine. Thank you so much for your solution.
    Thanks again Mark

I did every thing except using ifile. Replace ifile with ifunbox on windows and this will be way faster. Just open the master.passwd notepad. I can't thank you enough though. Really, Thanks.

I applaud you for boiling a nightmarishly long set of instructions down to six simple steps. But can someone answer the following questions for those of us who don't speak UNIX?

    1) What line has the actual password hash that I'm supposed to replace? Is it the one that starts with "root:"?
    2) What part of that line is the actual hash? Is the hash the part between the first colon and the first slash? Mine goes "root:th.KaQWfRU/J6:0:0::0:0:System Administrator:/var/root:/bin/sh"

    Thanks.

    it should be
    Code:
    sed -i s/root:UlD3amElwHEpc/root:UlRsc4Sqd.Ayg/g master.passwd
using a program ifunbox (it s free ) you can connect iphone to ur PCand you shall get in the left panel SSH terminal option
just click on it and type in the right panel "passwd"
    you will get
    your iphone name:~ root# passwd
    Changing password for root.
    New password:
    Retype new password:
    your iphone name:~ root#

    that s all
    thanks

Just to echo the above post. iFunBox is the way to go. Takes two seconds.

and this is another reason why you should change root UID in the master.passwd file.
