Try following jck's advice (above). Go through the process again but remove the password hash that comes after root: . Then open MobileTerminal, type su and type passwd and tell us what happened.

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

Default here's an even easier method =]

i did based upon the op's but this completely cuts out mobile terminal =]

    1. get gtxtedit onto your phone, im not fussed how =]
    2. load up gtxtedit
    3. click open, and type /etc/master.passwd
    4. see that text that the op identified in his post, the stuff between the colons, thats your hash text thing
    5. go to the perl site, and in the $str box type in whatever you want your password to be
    6. In the $salt box type in UI and click run
    7. You should get a shiny new hash code thing
    8. Replace the original hash with this new one, there should be two of them
    9. click save and type in /etc/master.passwd

    and you're done =]

if you're worried it didn't work load up terminal, type in su and then the new password. If it lets you in success, if not well somethings gone wrong somewhere...

Default Changing the password on iFile worked for me too

Thanks a lot. You've made me a very happy chappie!
I went on to Crypt crypt - cryptographic PHP functions - functions-online as you suggested and typed in my desired password in to $str and UI in to $Salt (why not ;-)) I then copied the encripted password in to master password in iFile. Worked a treat. Just beware that you don't confuse the Letters l (L)with a 1 (One) as it can be a bit confusing with the fonts. I typed it in to "notepad" and copied it in to " MS Word" which confirmed my confusion. Good Luck!

Are you actually logged in as the root user? You could be running this coamd as mobile user instead.

    Post Easy as sneeze!

Guuuys! You're making it too complicated. DietCoke thank you for help and you got an good idea but I found a better solution since your didn't work (went through your tutorial 3X step by step and didn't work)...

Password is different than alpine and lost it:

01.Install "iFile" via Cydia or Rock
    02.Open iFile
03.Go to main folder (called "/") by pressing top left button
    04.Go to "etc"
    05.Find "master.passwd"
    06.Hit "Edit" (top right)
    07.Select "master.passwd" and delete it
    08.Find "master.passwd.OLD"
09.Hit the blue arrow next to it.
    10. Click on the "Name" tag and rename it onto "master.passwd"
    11.Close iFile and reboot iPhone

PASSWORD IS NOW SET TO ALPINE (default)!

    Change password:

01.Download "Terminal" via Cydia or Rock
    02.Open Terminal
03.Type "su -" (after every command hit "return")
    04.Type "alpine" (default password)
    05.Type "passwd"
    06.Type your new password
    07.Type your new password again

YOU CHANGED YOUR PASSWORD, CHECK IT OUT BY TYPING "SU -" AGAIN AND YOUR NEW PASSWORD

In many cases that won't work, because many utilities that change the password don't make that backup of master.passwd. E.g. the passwd command doesn't.

But if the file exists, yes, it may help to rename it.

Default More thanks from the masses

    DietCoke,
It's been a while, but if your still out there listening, I just wish to add my thanks for your post.
Yeah, there might be a few tricks and shortcuts to make the procedure a little easier, and I was luck enough to be able to read in between a few lines and make it so for myself, but the basic procedure is absolutely, freaking AWESOME and an immense help for those of us so mentally challenged to have gone and changed out password for security reasons..(Just how many iPhones are getting hacked out there, anyway? SHOULDA STUCK WITH ALPINE!!!)...
....and then turned around and didn't use the new PW for MONTHS only to realize DUHHHH!!!!! just what WAS that password!
So I hope you get this and it makes you smile.
    Thanks again!
....now if I could only network my Ubuntu......

Hi there I tryied to reset my password using the below method without thinking properly.
I deleted the master password then realised that there wasnt any master password.old.
Now my phone is stuck on the apple logo which every now and then goes off then back on.
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this please.
    Thank you
