    Question Turning EDGE off/on

Does anyone know how to selectively turn EDGE off?
Racking up a huge bill by accidently downloading mail, letting friends play with Safari, Google Earth etc.
I dont want to cancel edge with my carrier only to select when I need to use it.
    thanks to all.

Is your phone jailbroken? There's an application called services which you can install through applications.app that allows you to disable EDGE.

Look for the "Services" application for the AppTapp installer! You can turn on/off Edge with it. But I don't know if the iPhone still connects to the internet via GPRS (without Egde!) ...

Use the AppTapp installer to install the Services app

Lets you turn on/off EDGE, WiFi and SSH

I found turning off EDGE and SSH made a huge difference to the battery life

Easiest solution of all is to put in bogus information in the EDGE configuration (APN/Username/Password). The Services app and DeEDGE app are good, but they do more or less what I describe above and it's one less application that you need to install.

i like the app, for the idea

but i find it crashes my phone, and it also seems like it turns off or messes with GPRS signal, my signal bars always dissappear... i dunno, but i will hold out till it evolves a bit

The services ap is pretty cool. All it does though is enter diable in you APN entry. It's good that you get the choice when you re-enable

Make sure to restart the iPhone.

Just type "off" into the top EDGE field, that works for me. And when I want it I just type in my carrier name or whatever you normally do.
