Default Trying to restore to 1.0.2 and it won't let me...

I've got a cracked American 1.0.2 phone which has the SMS crashing problem. I've downloaded the 1.0.2 firmware and tried to reinstall it onto the phone by putting the phone into recovery mode and alt-clicking "restore" in iTunes and then selecting which firmware file to use, but none of the files in the "Firmware" folder I downloaded are accepted by iTunes - no matter which file I click on, they're all rejected.

Would I be right in thinking that it's one of the .dmg files (that refuse to mount) in the "Firmware" folder? If so, why isn't it accepting them?

Would it be easier for me just to virginize the phone and update to 1.1.1?

How come there is a .dmg files in the firmware version 1.0.2 that you have downloaded? It's supposed to be the original format of the iPhone firmware (not the unzipped one), which should be under .IPSW format. If you didn't have the right format, you would not be able to restore. I suggest you change the file to .ipsw then try again. Remember that the name of the file must be kept original with the .ipsw tail (not the folder kind of file, it's only 1 file).

What I downloaded (using a link from the macrumors iPhone hacks forum which led to all the previous iPhone firmware packages) was a zipfile which, when unpacked, created a folder which contained another folder called "Firmware" which contained two .dmg files and some others. Is that not what the 1.0.2 firmware package should look like?
