This was my thought exactly... look at old SonyEricsson Phones, where you have to press a button combo to get to the unlock screen, then you can enter the unlock... There has to be a soft method for this on the iphone...It makes no sense that they wouldn't offer this at "Some" point in the future anyway.... only thinkg i can think is they may have it "Disabled" until a later firmware update.

Then I edited a new contact with a web-adress. When you tap the adress safari opens but only displays an error saying that it cannot access the website, it also looks like safari freezes up. Now i pressed the home button, and for s split second the iPhone shows a screen where you can select wi-fi networks. Now you have to be really quick and select a network before the phone freezes (probably only works with open networks). Next you get nack to the "emergency call page" and every onscreen button has frozen so the only thing you can do is turn off the phone. But it seems like it still remembers that you have selected a wi-fi network. Now you can go back to the contactlist using *#307# and from there use safari (what I'm doing right now).
And again, this is brand new iPhone that came from the store yesterday with the newest firmware preinstalled. Not activated (have not removed the plastic around the phone..). I'll try google maps and the email applications next. Sorry for misspellings, as I'm not used to write on an iPhone.
    Dude,

You have not realized how worthful your findings are. You are gonna gather lot of fame for this one. Hats off to you.

Exactly...i read somewhere on yahoo news that at&t will be providing unlock codes
to customers upon end of subscription (if requested). Those codes are depending
on IMEI, some 3 number code of country and 3-4 number code of new provider but
in essence end user will be entering some 15-20 digits code and phone will be
unlocked from at&t. Which considering future upgrades is much less troublesome
    method for end users.
There is already bunch of key generators of this type in form of web page or
application for different nokia phones on at&t but recent N series is a problem
cos of BB5 encryption or whatever...but...some questionable solutions exist as
much as i could see in limited search on this topic so far.
Some examples (not related to iPhone):
    http://unlock.nokiafree.org/
    http://www.expressunlock.com/

As much as i can understand so far, lots of time is spent on reverse engineering
upon each update from (rotten) apple while key given by at&t after 2 years of
contract will be same/working regardless of firmware version inside.
    How to make key generator?
Which secret code to enter together with unlock key provided by at&t?
    /shrug
I know, lots of fiction but it makes sense that this unlocking method exists
since other manufacturers of phones use it and same provider with different
    brands uses it.

This is pretty awesome.. Congrats guys on finding this. Hopefully they can use this rather than the suspect symlink method.
