    Default Tmobile sim contacts

In addition to the lack of a proxy settings app to make $5.99 internet work on the iphone, I noticed I don't have access to my Sim-card contacts.

All my address book is basically on that sim card. Is there any way to get the iPhone to recognize them? or am I going to have to re-enter them all one by one?

I synced them from my old phone to my Address Book over Bluetooth (using iSync on a Mac), and then they were available for iTunes to send over to the iPhone. It's not as convenient as reading the SIM directly, but it was a lot better than writing them one by one.

I just sync'd up my contacts from outlook, since I came over from a Windows Mobile phone.

Actually this gave me a GREAT excuse to re-do all my contacts properly. Its nice having everything so organized now that I didn't mind re-inputting 50 contacts.

With the iphone you can't import contacts from your SIM to the phone. Do it as suggested below. If you have a mac and a phone that does bluetooth, simply isync the details to your addressbook and change the sync options in itunes to include your contacts. On the PC it works identically, just using different tools to get your details to the PC.
