You're saying you can make calls with your own, non-AT&T (presumably T-Mobile) SIM card, yet iTunes complains that your SIM card isn't supported when you connect it?
Or am I missing something?

Try it without the sim card in.
You can also try downgrading iTunes (from 7.5?).

phones returned to you from apple do go right to the spring board but they are not activated. either manually do it or do a restore and appsnap.

P.S. Don't do it with iTunes 7.5. Not sure, but maybe problems.

I have not worked with a refurbished iPhone. My opinion is that your iPhone is now a jaikbroken, but locked FW 1.1.1 iPhone. Find the steps to unlock an oob Fw 1.1.1 iPhone.
Maybe a second opinion is need here. PM dtube or locked for help.
