FYI, for me, the only reason to have auto-lock to never is to keep the wifi on for ftp etc. and that stays on when the cable is connected even if the screen is locked.

I am not running FTP, but there are other reasons to have it auto set to never when connected.
For example, I want to listen to some windows media streams using vlc4iphone, which doesn't disable the auto-locking.
Also, when I am searching the Internet on the desktop for things about iPhone, I don't want it to be locked when I get to the phone.
Of course, I can always set it myself when it's connected and set it again when I am done, but since there is no battery issue when connected, why don't we have a choice for it to auto-set to never?

This feature would be incredibly handy. Surely (says we with no talent for achieving this) this can't be too difficult to implement?

Not what we're after. We basically want the built in auto-lock function to be set to never when a power source is detected, and back to a normal lock time otherwise. Insomnia is for application persistence.
