Default Taking a 2G iPhone back to the store

    Hello all,
I have a 1st generation iPhone that i got as a replacement and it seems that this one has a problem as well.

I'm trying to safely erase everything so I can take it back to the store and give me a new one. The iPhone was jailbroken and unlocked using the pwnage tool.

I did the same thing on November following this iclarified guide iClarified - iPhone - How to Securely Erase Your iPhone Before Resale (Comments) I don't remember what firmware was the iPhone on. Probably < 2.x

Everything worked out great and I managed to 'trick' the O2 guys to give me a new one. It seems though that the phone they gave me was refurbished and it has some probs of its own.

Right now the phone is on 2.1 and I'm trying to set the / partition to read only so I can proceed with erasing everything else. Here's what I get:

    iphone:~ root# umount -f /private/var
    iphone:~ root# mount -o ro /private/var
    iphone:~ root# mount -o ro /
    mount_hfs: Resource busy

It seems that I can't really proceed. Any ideas how to safely wipe out everything so it will look like i've never jailbroken/unlocked it before?

P.S I know that the O2 guys need to see that the phone is activated before taking it in but I'll manage to do that later on. I just need to safely wipe out everything and leave no traces of what the phone went through.

    Thank you.

Hello Marios, There are many downgrade tutorials on iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials (most of them in windows) for many versions. Maybe you can downgrade to your desired version and take it up from there with another tool for safe erase!

DFU restore the iPhone to firmware 2.2.1 and (almost) all traces are gone. Only if the guys at o2 use forensic methods they may find old data. this would involve major work and i doubt they will.

    Thanks guys for your replies.

@volkspost so what you are saying is to put the iphone in DFU and restore it to 2.2.1 and everything will be gone ? Do I need to perform the 'erase all content and settings' option from the 'reset' menu first? The reason I will be giving the iphone back is because it keeps crashing. Doesn't that mean that they will perform some 'tests' to see what went wrong? The O2 guys actually send the iphone to apple and they give the green light whether to replace the iphone or not.

They will test if the iPhone is jailbroken - it is not after DFU, nor activated or hacked.
Only if they hack the iPhone, mount the internal memory and use tools that make deleted files re-appear they will find your data like emails, photos and stuff.
They'll probably check in the papers if you are a legit customer, if the iPhone came with a contract and stuff like this, but thats probably it.

@volkspost thanks. I'll do that and what should I do if I want everything to be erased from the phone? So they won't be able to retrieve any info.

In iTunes make sure to disable auto-sync when iPhone/iPod is connected is disabled

After the DFU restore to 2.2.1 use quickpwn to jailbreak and activate the iPhone, no need to unlock. Then goto Settings > General > Reset and choose "Erase all content and Settings". Make sure the iPhone is connected to AC or USB to not run out of power, the wiping process will take about 2 hours.
Cause you DFU restored before, all life data is deleted and this is what the iPhone is going to delete.

Problem (kind of): On jailbroken iPhones the process in most cases ends with the iPhone hanging in restore mode. This is no problem in your case cause you have to restore to fw 2.2.1 anyway again to get rid of the jailbreak and stuff once the process is finished.

Thanks @volkspost. I did everything you mentioned. I hope everything goes well and send me a replacement.
