Default [AT&T] SIM Question for a Non-iPhone activated SIM Card

    Hello,

My friend wants to buy an iPhone and has AT&T but he doesn't want to pay for the plan. If he buys the iPhone from AT&T then goes home and unlocks/jailbreaks it the phone will work with his AT&T SIM card right? Because I don't think it works if the phone hasn't been unlocked. I tried it with another friend before and put his SIM in my iPhone and it didn't get signal just had -_____ like only the smallest bar was raised and didn't say AT&T, but I put my SIM back in and I had full signal and it said AT&T. So I was just wondering if he could unlock it and not have to pay for the $20-$40 data plan.

    thanks,
    DJ McG

he has to unlock it for it to work right? Not just activate.

    Default Just activate (and Jailbreak)

I've done this several times for people who have ATT SIMs in their other phones and want to use an iPhone. This is how I started out with my iphone by using teh SIM from my ATT blackberry.

ZiPhone will do all you need, of course there are other ways to do it as well. You need to "activate" the phone and I'd recommend jailbreaking it while you're at it so that you can install and play with cool stuff. no need to unlock to use an ATT SIM

BTW, the Blackberry unlimited data plan is nearly twice as much as the iPhone data plan, so in the end you'll save money if you run the iPhone on the iPhone plans. Even better, if you have an ATT account add the iPhone as the second phone ($9.99/month) and add the data plan ($20) for the best deal.
