T-Mobile's response to iPhone wi-fi calling (UMA)
I wrote T-Mobile and asked them to throw $10,000 at a talented cracker (one of you guys)... to have a SHRED of vision... to do something "out of the box", to let their customers "get more"... iPhone will be unlocked soon, easily jailbroken, etc. The killer app for the iphone is Wi-Fi calling, and I'm not talking about cheezy Skype, etc... I'm talking SEAMLESS handoff between a strong mobile provider (T-Mobile) and any wi-fi access point.
They don't need to support it in-house; they can hire a developer and a couple of support jockeys to sell, support and maintain the software as a "beta" service. If they get 2,000 LIFETIME customers out of it, the software and support will pay for itself, PLUS give them a lower-risk audience (Hackint0sh types) to beta test it. Then, when they can offiically "carry" the iPhone, they will be prime-time and ready to go with fully supported UMA calling.
If you're interested, use the "Contact Us" link on their website! Action happens only thru consistent customer demand. Here was their response:
Dear Michael,
Thank you for contacting T-Mobile. We are thrilled to hear from you
once again! We thank you very much for getting back to us. From what
we understand is you would like us to support VoIP functions with the
iPhone using such free services as Skype. We can certainly see the
importance of your inquiry and are delighted to assist you with your
inquiry today.
Since the iPhone is exclusive to AT&T, T-Mobile does not support this
device. The exclusivity agreement with AT&T for that unit is for more
than 12 months at which T-Mobile has the opportunity to carry the unit
at which point we can support it. However this is in the distance
future. What we have done is forward your suggestions to the
appropriate department for review for possible future consideration. We
thank you for your feedback Michael.
It was our sheer delight to be of assistance to you today and we hope to
hear again from you in the near future.
If you have more questions or concerns Michael, please feel free to
contact us at anytime or by calling us at 1-800-937-8997.
Thank you for choosing T-Mobile Michael, we appreciate your business.
Have a great day!
Sincerely,
Frank

Doesn't it make you just make you feel oh so squiggly inside whenever you cause T-Mobile (or any other cell phone provider) to feel "sheer delight"? It does me. Now, if I can only make an insurance or credit card company feel the pleasures of sheer delight.
