Default syncing iphone without firmware updating?

I've tried to search everywhere, but maybe I didn't look deep enough. I appolgize in advanced for any reposting of questions, but if you could, please advise or redirect a solution or previously answered questions my way. thanks!

    Question:
I have an unlocked phone. I disabled automatic updates and "auto-syncing" in my preferences. Is it okay to sync my iphone to itunes solely to sync all my media and contacts without getting bricked? Logic would say yes since auto updates are disabled, but who knows if Apple has a trick up its sleeve?

I know not to update to 1.1.1, which is why I havent synced for about a week now... but I'd really like to sync my other functions, ipod, contacts etc....

    Thanks guys!

Yes, you can sync and it won't upgrade your firmware

promise? cause I'm scared shitless to even let the two connect...

I had perfect timing of when I bought this phone.... the next week, they released the firmware.

how exactly are all these phones being bricked? Is it neglegance on the users part of just allowing itunes to update or what? or did they not know to NOT upgrade? seriously? all of this bricking phenomenon makes me feel like itunes is just hunting down unlocked phones...

Some people are just daft, some people upgrade on purpose. Don't ask me why

So what exactly should we turn off?

I went into preferences and turned off "Check for updates automatically"

    What else?

and how do you disable "auto-syncing"?

the "check for updates automatically" option only refers to updates of itunes.
it will still check for iphone firmware updates, but it will ask you if you want to download and install the update. all you ahve to do is select "no" and "don't remind me again" and then it won't update untill u click the update button under the iphone menu.

don't worry apple isn't forcing the update unto the iphones (yet!)

You can use a firewall (I am using little snitch on the mac) to block the apple update server.

Everytime I click check for updates itunes says it can not contact the server lol.
