    Question Stupid 3G question

It seems everyone is complaining about the poor speeds of AT&T's EDGE network and the lack of 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) network support for the iPhone.

So I'll expose my total ignorance and ask is an upgrade from EDGE to 3G hardware or software? In other words, if I buy an iPhone now and they come out with a 3G version in 6 months does that mean I'd have to buy a new iPhone if I wanted 3G support?

In order to support 3G, you need a hardware (radio chip) inside iPhone. The current version of iPhone does not have it. So, you have to buy a new iPhone (device) when it becomes available and if you still want to get hold of it.

So, meaning that apple Could put a 3G Chip into the phone later, forcing us 1.0ers to buy a new one, but still have it be EDGE and then do a software update?

Yes they if they add the 3G chip which is not present in today's iPhone.

So does this mean Arstechnica is mistaken, or that I'm mixed up about my terminology?

    From http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardw...-review.ars/14 :

"The IC in the lower-left is purported to be a Multimedia Engine by Infineon by several sources. However, the markings on this device do not match up with any Infineon devices as far as we could tell. This particular part is a jack-of-all trades that can decode/encode audio formats, decode H.264 video, perform EDGE modem capabilities, and interface with Bluetooth, FM radio, and other systems, as well as drive the camera and the high-resolution display. Interestingly enough, the data sheet for this device claims that it is 3G upgradable and contains a WCDMA coprocessor."

I haven't really looked into the insides of the iphone, but my understanding from most reviews is that there is a PMB 8876 chip inside which is upgradeable with a WCDMA coprocessor. With that said, is there no chance of a coprocessor being in the phone that could be activated?

This is one of the main reasons why I have canceled my USA phone order in favor of a possible UK 3G version in the next few months.

    See thread:
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1529

If the UK launch was 12+ months away, I'd probably still have gone ahead with the US phone in the interim.

If the UK phone does launch with 3G (and can be registered in the USA), you can expect the reverse in the current trend where-by a lot of US users will be buying UK phones!!!

Sorry to inform you but it is highly unlikely a 3G iPhone for the UK (or any other European country for that matter) will work on AT&T's (or T-Mobile USA's) 3G network. Why?

    - The standard 3G frequency in Europe is 2100.
    - AT&T's 3G frequency is 850/1900.
    - T-Mobile USA's planned 3G network is going to be a variant 2100 network not compatible with current european 2100 3G handsets.
    - there are literally only a handful of current or planned tri-band 3G (850/1900/2100 aka "world 3G") phones.
    - Very unlikely that Apple, after going through so much effort to carrier lock the iPhone, would go through the added expense of making a european iPhone tri-band 3G with the only benefit of offering such a phone being that it could be hacked to work in the US.
