Even if the applications do send the IMEI information, we need to closely read Apple's privacy policy and legal disclaimers first.

It could be that they are using the IMEI number in every request URL to uniqely identify requests but use the information for no other purpose and do not identify customers or consumers ( ie linking the data with say credit card data or apple care data ). I am not defending Apple and do not intend to. I am saying let's not jump to conclusions even if the IMEI number IS being sent out. If it is and Apple HAS committed to using this data only to provide say better service levels and not to identify consumers - then it is okays

At least one other company does this and has a specific legal disclaimer therefore.

On the other hand, it could be that Apple is playing evil big brother

So, if they use the IMEI for the purposes you said, is it possible to spoof the IMEI and try to retrieve informations from another customer/account ?

Because my stocks and weather apps are sending "00" when retrieving data, that means i can hardcode any kind of number, even real IMEI, if i really want to.

Do you belive that Apple or other company like Google and Microsoft use our privacy data only for our better service? I don't belive on it.

I think they do, but until someone can probe the packets sent and prove them innocent or guilty, i will just keep the "00" in my apps code...

Per their Terms of Service, they are allowed to do this. Of course, I never agreed to any Terms of Service, I only agreed to a retail transaction...

It is entirely irresponsible of them not to protect the IMEI with HTTPS. Any rogue open wifi can now run a proxy or bogus DNS for apple.com and collect IMEIs.

We really need a Little Snitch / Zone Alarm for the iPhone.

    Clearly, Apple cannot be trusted.

Ok, nothing strange, the first line of decoded tcp stream is a post to apple but isn't in clear text but crypted

    POST /dgw?imei=[IMEI CRYPTED]&apptype=weather&t=2 HTTP/1.1
