Yeah but I would not install blacksn0w for general use on AT&T. You could install it to test and then uninstall it until you actually need it.

Limited success on the 3GS last night using PWNAGE.

1: built and installed an un-activated custom ipsw for the 3GS. phone then was activated through itunes and I was able to use nimble to extract the certs and keys. (yea!)

2: built a hacktivated custom ipsw for the 3GS but can't get the phone to install it. I've tried both DFU mode and restore mode

on DFU mode, it extracts the software and quickly gives me an error code 1600

on restore mode (with the USB/itunes photo) it extracts the software and then tries to prepare the phone for the upgrade but just hangs with the USB/itunes image, it never gets to the apple logo/progress bar on the phone screen, and eventually comes back with a 1604 error code.

I've since used the standard itunes restore to get the apple ipsw installed and the phone now works again. This "prepares the phone" and the Apple logo/progress bar shows up. But for the life of me I can't get the custom ipsw to install.

    I'm so close!

    Okay quick answers..

    1. All jailbreaking on 3GS is done via either recovery mode or once pwned by simply option clicking restore in iTunes and choosing an IPSW. DFU mode is not used on the 3GS for jailbreaking. DFU mode is useful for removing all traces of jailbreak, especially when you are trying to troubleshoot jailbreak
    2. Pwnagetool usually needs to prepare iTunes so it accepts pwned IPSWs, this generally only needs to be done once per computer (not sure about computers with multiple user accounts).
    3. Pwnagetool requires that iTunes and iTunesHelper are not running when it asks you if your 3GS is already jailbroken/pwned. This is very important.

OK, that did it! I must have had the helper running while I was building, that's the only thing I can think of.

But, I'm still not there. I got the certs injected, everything installed but...

I have NO SIGNAL from AT&T. The good news is that the WiFi works (so I don't have to worry about that) but I can't access the cellular network.

sooooooo close! (but so far!) Any suggestions?

BTW, now that this is PWNED, I can just use the standard click-restore to update with new builds/etc? no more Restore or DFU mode, correct?

    a bit more on this

If I install my Europe SIM (I have not installed BlackSn0w yet) it doesn't even complain that the SIM is not valid. it appears that the phone isn't even trying to read the SIM that's installed, thus no service.

everything else is good to go, Cydia is installed, I've installed the push certs and injected them back where they belong. iTunes has synced up my contacts, music and videos. All I need now is a Phone!

    Answering my own questions again:

It appears that if you use the "activate" feature on the pwnage tool for the phone you have to use BlackRa1n to unlock the baseband. (I did some searching around and people reported the same with the older versions and using UltraSn0w solved the issue)

Anyway, I loaded up BlackSn0w and immediately the ATT service came back up.

To those who are doing the same as me, this is what I did to get it going:

1: build a custom ipsw with Pwnage using the 3.1.2 firmware, with the phone not activated by default (turn off activate phone in general tab) load this into the phone (use Pwnage to get things set up then itunes to restore)
2: use itunes to activate the phone then follow the directions on creating custom keys and certifications in the genius bar topic to extract the youtube and push notifications

3: build a custom ipsw with Pwnage using the 3.1.2 firmware with the phone activated by default. use Pwnage to get things set up and thenitunes to restore, I told pwnage that the phone had not been pwned since I didn't know better.

4: the phone is activated so you don't need itunes. again follow the directions on creating custom keys to inject the keys back into the phone so that push will work. set up the phone as a "new" phone on itunes. If you're like me you will see no cell service from any SIM at this phase but wifi should work fine, enable it.

5: add blackweather as a source in cydia and install blackra1n to unlock the phone

    life is good!

Thanks to everyone in this forum for answering my questions, hopefully my summary of what worked will help others get an unlocked and jailbroken 3GS
