I have read somewhere that if you have to do the following :-

WINDOWS PC : Press SHIFT and the restore button in Itunes it should show 1.02
MAC : Press ALT and the restore button in Itunes it should show 1.02

you will need to download the firmware 1.0.2 to your pc .
hold shift before the itunes ask for recovery .
Then you will be able to select the firmware from your HDD .

    Default has this been confirmed?

also, when exactly do I press SHIFT (on windows)?

I have a few 1.0 and 1.0.1 iPhones and would like to update them to 1.0.2. Do I do this right after I click on the update button in iTunes (v7.3.0.54)? What is the exact process of updating from a fw file on my HDD?

    thanks!

Hold down shift WHILE you are clicking update. I swear, people need to learn how to read and search. I have seen these exact same questions over the forum 50 times over the last week and a half. Search before you post. It is that easy.

I am assuming this means if you have not unlocked your iPhone and want to update to 1.1.1, you can still roll back to 1.0.2?

yes, if all goes well you can update a 1.0 and 1.0.1 phone to 1.0.2 and use the regular tools to unlock it. All will be fine as long as you do not update to 1.1.1

First you want to download itunes 7.4.1.2 here:
    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....TunesSetup.exe

Then you want to download the 1.0.2 fw here:
    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....8_Restore.ipsw

    Then install 7.4.1.2

Then to restore to 1.0.2, plug iphone into usb, when grey apple comes on screen, press and hold bith the power and home buttons until the yellow triangle shows up. open itunes, when it tells you to restore, hold shift, press restore and select the 1.0.2 software you downloaded from above.
