Software unlock howto
Geohot did an excellent job while communicating instantly about his work in the chat and in his blog. I'm sure the .dev team is doing an excellent job searching for a sw unlock, but in total obscurity. Well, I think there are some reasons to be silent, but the other side is that the silence of the .dev team is serving well all kind of hoax and crap :-(
Read the geohot blog. There is an anonymous contributor, quoted by geo in his blog. I suppose he revealed the A17 trace and the key to the hw unlock. He's probably working for Infineon, or having some secret info by a friend, who knows. The fact is, he gave the hint.
For what I understood till now, the .dev team needs another anonymous contributor, who knows the sw command to put the baseband in write mode.
So here is my little howto for a sw unlock:
1. Stop looking for miracles;
2. Give the .dev team some donations;
3. Search for a well informed guy from Infineon.
IMHO that's the only way to get a free software unlock.

This place gets worse by the day...
I swear.
Google people, Wikipedia, you have thousands of outlets at your fingertips in this magical place called the internet. Searching for "Infineon" would have probably given you the answer you needed, and googling "Infineon and iPhone" would have definitely done so. If you don't even know who makes the GSM radio in the phone three months after its release, don't think you're going to impact this at all. Conspiracy theorists, thieves, and the misinformed have made this place just dandy.
