SMS messages cost to receive with unlocked iPhone?
I heard that apparently with AT&T contracts, iPhone users are charged for receiving SMS messaging. I am using an unlocked iPhone using Rogers in Canada and I had assumed that I was not charged for receiving SMS messages because Rogers says they are free to receive. But I was thinking that possibly it has something to do with the phone itself (since it threads SMS messages together like Gmail). Does anyone know how it works and if you are charged for receiving SMS messages on an unlocked iPhone?

Surely someone has an iPhone not with AT&T long enough to have a bill... Are you billed for receiving SMS messages?

Threading SMSs is just for presentation within the phone, it in no way affects how/what you are charged. As well, unlocked phones operate just like locked ones do. Charging and all.

I think what you said makes sense, but I don't know why AT&T says that they charge for receiving SMS messages (I figured it might have been the threading of SMS messages).

duh, all carriers in the US charge for reciving SMS....they also charge you for reciving phone calls

Indeed, this has nothing to do with the phone, but is related to the provider.
I think only the USA has such a system in place where users have to pay to receive calls and/or SMSs. In most other countries the price per minute and per SMS is slightly higher but then only the "sender" has to pay (which in my opinion definitely is a more normal system).

I thought the US might have ditched this system a long time ago...
How can you manage your monthly spend if you have to pay to receive calls and SMS?
Do incoming calls and SMS come out of your inclusive minutes and texts?
In the UK, we've never had to pay to receive stuff.
The only time I have to pay to receive calls is when I'm roaming in a foreign country... Although SMSs are still free to receive.
