You may get wrong on the power of word-of-mouth mate... You dont need to educate customers to know which forums offer best solution, there are unlock shops everywhere! Once an unlock occurs, it will spread all over the world in not much time, therefor u will see the "Unlock iPhone" ads everywhere... You will even eventually learn it from one of your friends as well...

The group of people who buys phones easily is the ones that they dont pay huge amount of money... like iphone's price for a phone... people who buys expensive phones easily either very rich or business people... Otherwise, buying an expensive phone with an expensive contract with it is not everyone's business...

And you are wrong on sales vs activation... Almost 1/5 or 1/4 of the sold phones are actually activated and they didnt release any data on how many of the activated ones went pass the 14 days dead line...??? If you calculate the figures, you will understand how many people would be looking for unlock solution everywhere?

Check how many iphones are going all over the world? by usa opportunist...

Actually the data that we have shows 140,000+ activations vs 270,000 sales of iphones in the first 30 hours coupled with the fact there were many many problems in ATT activation system that a lot of activations are delayed. It will be interesting to see how many activated phones there are after say 30/60/90 days.
There may be many many unlock shops, but I am willing to bet that most people who live and work in the US (minimal overseas travel) don't bother about unlock. Unlocking is much more popular in Asia and Europe where there are multiple GSM carriers and moving between carriers are beneficial. In USA, you have T-mobile, and AT&T (hardly a choice) and in Canada Rogers and Fido (owned by Rogers), again, hardly a choice. So what else motivates US and Canadian consumers from really pursuing an unlock solution? The few that will travel frequently to a foreign land and buy a local simcard? Very few and many that I know just pick up a cheap local handset and pop in a pay as you go card.
I think the situation with iPhone is a little bit unique in that Apple/ATT forces you to go with specific plans and cannot just move their old sim cards to the iphone and continue on their existing plans. But this sort of unlock has already happened and should satisfy most customers (except T-Mobile customers).

Thats rite mate, for att & cingular customers they dont need new contracts as the hack works for them atm.

The problem isnt in usa the problem will be in europe and asia we are discussing, as too many carriers exist and locking the phone with one carrier will block all the opportunities... People dont just switch carriers here in europe... Especially for 2 years commitment, carrier must really provide some value for it... If apple and x carrier partner works as in usa that would suck big time... i hope they wont ask same amount of money for the iphone and contract deal as in usa...

For T-Mobile customers, it wouldnt be really hard for T-Mobile to utilize same voice mail thingy if apple didnt lock up the opportunities... Proof is probably we ll see in eurpean version that voice mail version in different carriers....

Hopefully exclusive european or asian carriers wont pursue the same direction as att did to force their customers to do...

We wait and see... (i still think apple and att did wrong in usa launch and blocked the possible sales figures in real- for real activation figures, i bet not more than 1/3 or 1/4 of the sales... if you dont believe me, prove me wrong, bcoz if it was so high numbers, why are they scared to publish a fully detailed report? they did a small publishing, and u probably know what happend to their share prices? give u a clue? hope i m wrong, but i guess not...)
