    Default Is she toast?

I fat fingered a rm -r while in root and it looks like I smoked the /bin directory off my iPhone. It won't boot now and I'm getting a "root device is mounted read-only" "If you wish to boot the system: exit"

Does anyone know of a way to restore my new brick or am I fubar'd.

thanks in advance for any small amounts of pity.

Man, does anyone read the FAQs on Apples website or even here?

Press the sleep and home button for 25secs until it goes into a restore mode saying please connect to iTunes. From there connect it to iTunes and it will restore the phone back to the unactivated state factory fresh.

Yeah, my reading skills are far better than my rm'ing skils. That ol' chestnut was tried numerous times but since the phone can't actually boot to that point, I'm guessing it's a wedge for the screen door.

Anyone else know if it's possible to reimage the phone any other way?

The iTunes restore process normally just puts the firmware back on and the system software back on... the /bin directory on a fresh, unhacked phone normally contains one program, launchctl...

...and if it's that program that is needed by the 25 second power+snooze combo, then you're screwed.

You could try using iPHUC to connect over USB and mkdir /bin, then putfile launchctl (from someone who has a fresh copy) - but if iPHUC won't work then I can't think of anything else. In fact if you don't have sshd running then you are in trouble anyway because putfile doesn't do execute permissions and you'll need that on launchctl

If you've done a rm -r in the root directory and blasted everything, then only iTunes has any hope of saving you and that depends on the comms between the phone and the computer being based on the firmware and not the unix side (because you've deleted all the unix stuff).

Perhaps us old unix dinosaurs should point out the dangers of running as root??? It's possible to create a new user on your iPhone that doesn't have such power i.e. destroying system directories... just add a new entry to master.passwd and the group file and copy 'em across...

Ah.. when all else fails, look for the simple answer - bad cable.

Thanks to all who provided responses, it seems the aftermarket cable that comes with the car charger can be a bit flaky.

    Restore complete, problem solved.

    Cheers,

    rm
